Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about my neighbour living in appartment 47. He plays video games with loud noise late at night.
This issue arose about a few weeks before when this person moved into this apartment next to mine. He usually starts to play around 10 pm and continues till 3 am in the morning. Due to the adjacent flat I can clearly hear his voice in my living area.
As I am a university student and my exams are scheduled next month. Loud volume at night disturbs my sleep often due to which I suffer from daytime fatigue. It not only affects my studies but also does not allow me to focus during the classes. Therefore, I will not be able to score good marks in my exams.
I also wrote a letter to my neighbour a week ago to request him to turn the volume down at late night hours or use earphones instead. My request was not taken seriously, so I am requesting to contact this person and remind him about music and other noise policies for tenants.
I believe you will take this concern into consideration and I look forward to hearing from you about an update to resolve this issue.
Yours faithfully,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three required points clearly: you explain that the problem began a few weeks ago when the neighbour moved in, describe the late-night gaming and its effects on your sleep, studies, and concentration, and ask the agency to contact him about noise policies. The request is specific and supported by the detail that you already wrote to the neighbour without success. This gives the letter a clear purpose and develops the main concerns well. To make the response even more complete, specify a practical outcome you want the agency to arrange, such as asking the neighbour to stop gaming after a stated time or confirming what action the agency will take. Overall, the task is addressed effectively, with only a small opportunity to sharpen the requested resolution.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: complaint, timing and circumstances, personal impact, and requested action. Paragraphing helps the reader follow each part, and linking expressions such as “Due to,” “Therefore,” and “so” show how the ideas relate. The progression from the failed direct request to contacting the agency is especially logical. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the final paragraph repeats the request to resolve the issue without adding much detail. You could improve the flow by varying transitions and making the relationship between the noise and its consequences more direct. For example, combine the late-night schedule with the resulting sleep disruption, then move naturally to the specific action you expect from the agency.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “complain,” “adjacent flat,” “daytime fatigue,” and “policies for tenants.” These choices communicate the situation and its impact clearly. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “plays video games with loud noise” and “music and other noise policies” do not describe the issue as precisely as they could, while “score good marks” is less natural in this context. The spelling “appartment” is also inaccurate. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling, while keeping the tone formal. For instance, describe the neighbour as playing games at a high volume and refer to the agency’s noise or quiet-hours policy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, such as “As I am a university student and my exams are scheduled next month” and “It not only affects my studies but also does not allow me to focus during the classes.” Most meanings remain clear, and the letter uses past, present, and future forms to explain the history, ongoing problem, and expected outcome. Some grammatical errors remain. In “This issue arose about a few weeks before,” the time expression is not formed correctly; “a few weeks ago” is needed. “Due to the adjacent flat I can clearly hear…” also has an unclear grammatical relationship, and “requesting to contact this person” needs a different verb pattern, such as “requesting that you contact him.” More accurate clause construction would strengthen control.
