Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to formally complain about my neighbour - Mr. Charles, renting apartment number 407.They play video games late at night, and are very loud and noisy, which disturbs my sleep routine.
This issue started from last month, when one of his friends has started living with him. Usually, every night after 1 AM, the speakers are at very high pitch and to worsen it, both of them are shouting aggressively while playing.
The loud volume affects my sleep, and eventually, I wake up tired. I am a person who requires atleast eight hours of sound sleep, otherwise I cannot function well. Not only it is affecting my body physically, but I am also unable to work productively during my working hours.
I have tried to raise this concern to them personally, but they were not approachable. Hence, I would like you to formally notify them regarding the issue, and also remind them regarding the noise policies of the building.
I would appreciate it if this matter can be resolved immediately without any arguments.
Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three requested points clearly. You identify when the problem began (“from last month,” after a friend moved in), explain its effects on your sleep and work, and make a specific request for the agency to notify the tenants and remind them of building noise policies. The details about noise after 1 a.m. and your unsuccessful attempt to speak to the neighbours make the complaint persuasive and well supported. The formal opening and closing also suit the recipient. To make the request even more complete, you could ask the agency to investigate or follow up if the disturbance continues; however, the action you request is already clear and relevant, with only a minor opportunity to add a next step.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the complaint is introduced, the timing and source of the noise are explained, its effects are described, and the requested action follows. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, while links such as “Hence” and “Not only” show relationships between ideas. The progression is easy to follow, and the letter format is appropriate. Some connections could be smoother: “This issue started from last month” leads into the cause somewhat abruptly, and “I would appreciate it if this matter can be resolved” shifts from the request to a closing without specifying what resolution would involve. A more precise transition or follow-up sentence would make cohesion more consistently polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “formally complain,” “disturbs my sleep routine,” “approachable,” and “noise policies.” These choices communicate the problem and its impact clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural collocations: “speakers are at very high pitch” does not naturally describe loud volume, and “sound sleep” is less suitable than “uninterrupted sleep” in this context. “Aggressively” may also overstate the neighbours’ behaviour when “shouting loudly” would be more neutral and precise. Greater control of collocation and more exact wording would add flexibility and polish while preserving the clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex structures, such as “I have tried to raise this concern to them personally, but they were not approachable” and the conditional request beginning “I would appreciate it if…”. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors and punctuation slips remain: “when one of his friends has started living with him” uses an unsuitable tense after “started,” and “Not only it is affecting my body physically” has incorrect word order for this construction. There is also a missing space after the full stop in “407.They,” and the final request would be more accurate as “if this matter could be resolved.” More consistent control of verb forms, clause structure, and punctuation would strengthen accuracy.
