Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to lodge a complaint about my neighbours who moved recently next to my apartment.

As you may know, they receive their flat from ADY accommodation agency.

The main reason which bother me is that they play video games late at night with a loud volume which is quite disturbing. This is unacceptable because me and my children have to wake up early since their school starts at 7 A.M. Due to high volume we are facing disturped sleep patterns which consequently be detrimental for our health.

Could it be possible to ask them to be responsible for their actions and take care about their neighbourhood. Only when they will be informed about the problem can this issue be resolved. While it is true that they may not be doing this intentionally, I believe discussing the issue with them might be a good idea. I would be grateful if you could consider my request. Thanks for your time and consideration.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerly,

Sabiha waheed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the complaint clearly and explain its effect on your family, noting that you and your children must wake early for school and that the noise disrupts sleep. However, the task is only partly addressed because you do not clearly say when the problem began: “moved recently” refers to the neighbours’ arrival, but does not specify when the late-night gaming started. Your requested action is also somewhat indirect. You ask the agency to “ask them to be responsible” and suggest discussing the issue, but a specific request—such as contacting the tenants and asking them to keep the volume down after a stated time—would make your purpose clearer. Develop these details so each bullet point is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: you introduce the complaint, explain its impact, then make a request and close politely. Linking expressions such as “Due to,” “consequently,” and “While it is true” help show relationships between ideas, and the progression is generally easy to follow. To move beyond this level, make the connections more precise and avoid a few awkward transitions. For example, “Only when they will be informed” interrupts the request and is not a natural way to connect the agency’s action to a solution. Clearer paragraphing would also help separate the background, effects, and requested action. Overall, the organisation works, though some cohesion is mechanical or unclear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “lodge a complaint,” “disturbing,” “detrimental,” and “consideration.” These choices communicate the issue and its seriousness, and you attempt some less common vocabulary. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “receive their flat from” and “take care about their neighbourhood.” There are also spelling errors in “disturped” and “sincerly,” which slightly reduce the polish of the letter without preventing understanding. Prefer precise, natural phrases such as “rent their flat through the agency” and “be considerate of their neighbours.” Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would make your vocabulary more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because me and my children have to wake up early” and a concessive clause beginning “While it is true.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the errors do not generally obstruct communication. Some grammatical problems remain, however. In “the main reason which bother me,” the verb should agree with “reason,” and the clause is awkwardly formed. “Only when they will be informed” also uses an unsuitable future form after “when”; “only when they are informed” is more appropriate. In addition, “me and my children” should be “my children and I” as the subject. Review agreement, clause patterns, and pronoun case while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
