Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to complain about a noise from my neighbours apartment in my building where I moved with my family approximately two weeks ago. Unfortunately, the family who resides across my unit play video games at excessive volume. Since we have moved in this building, they are continously causing disturbance, particularly during the night. I usually begin my work early in the morning; however, because of loud volume from next apartment, I am unable to get adequate sleep. Due to sleep depreviation, I cannot concentrate on my work and my children also struggles to focus on their studies. I tried to explain them the problem, but I have not yet received satisfactory response.

In view of these circumstance, I would therefore like to request you to serve them a formal written warning to stop excessive noise. Alternatively, I would appreciate it if you could arrange a another apartment in same building on another floor.

I hope you will consider my suggestions at your earliest convenience and take appropriate action to resolve the issue.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Your faithfully,

Parminder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify when the problem began (“approximately two weeks ago” and “Since we have moved in”), explain its effects on your sleep, work, and children’s studies, and request a formal warning or a move to another apartment. These details make the complaint relevant and supported. The request for alternative accommodation is a useful practical option, although it could be made more precise by specifying whether you would accept a different unit or floor and whether this is a second choice if the warning fails. Overall, the task is covered clearly; a little more development of the requested action would make the letter more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its impact, propose solutions, and close with a request for action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “however,” “Due to,” and “Alternatively” help show relationships between ideas. The contrast between the noise and your early work schedule is especially easy to follow. Some connections are slightly repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated references to the problem and the use of “In view of these circumstance, I would therefore.” The final request and sign-off are appropriately placed. To make the organisation more polished, use a more direct transition into your proposed action and ensure each paragraph has a distinct focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of complaint-related vocabulary, including “excessive volume,” “disturbance,” “adequate sleep,” “formal written warning,” and “appropriate action.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate for an agency. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “a noise” is less natural than “noise,” “loud volume” is redundant, and “sleep depreviation” contains a spelling error and is not the most natural expression here. “Serve them a formal written warning” is also an unusual collocation. Greater accuracy with common phrases would strengthen the otherwise adequate range and make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence beginning “I usually begin my work early in the morning; however…” and the conditional request, “I would appreciate it if you could arrange…”. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors persist, including “the family … play” (subject–verb agreement), “my children also struggles” (agreement), and “a another apartment” (article use). There are also errors in “in same building” and “Your faithfully,” where articles or the appropriate form are needed. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Review agreement, articles, and formal letter conventions, while retaining the complex sentence structures you already attempt.
