Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to complain about the noise coming from my neighbour's flat who also rented the flat through your agency.

The problem started two weeks ago when my neighbour started playing loud video games especially late at night which created a serious problem among the whole building. He is not aware about the rules and regulations about the living in the flat.

The sound that comes from the video games make harder for me to sleep at night as I am a working professional I have to early in the morning. Without improper sleep I feel tired and irritated during my work hours. It gets difficult for me to concentrate on my daily activities. I always tried to ignore the situation, but its becoming more difficult.

I would appreciate if you contact him and tell him to make less noise during nighttime hours.

Also remind him about the rules and regulations of the building in order to prevent this problem from happening again.

I hope you will take this matter seriously and resolve it as soon as possible.

Yours Faithfully,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the problem began “two weeks ago,” describe its effects on your sleep, energy and concentration, and ask the agency to contact the neighbour and remind him of the building rules. These details make the complaint relevant and reasonably well supported. The impact on your work is particularly clear, although the request could be more fully developed by asking the agency to investigate or specify a reasonable quiet-hours expectation, and by indicating what follow-up you would like. The opening “Dear Sir” also does not follow the supplied “Dear Sir or Madam” greeting. Overall, the task is handled effectively, with some scope to make the requested action more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear progression: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraphs explain the timing and effects, and the final paragraphs make a request and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and links such as “Without” and “but” show relationships between ideas. The sequence is easy to follow throughout. Some connections are less smooth, however: “which created a serious problem among the whole building” is attached to the sentence about when the issue began, although the building-wide effect is not developed further. The request is also split across two short paragraphs. Grouping the requested actions together and linking the effects more directly would make the progression feel more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including relevant expressions such as “complain,” “late at night,” “concentrate,” and “resolve it as soon as possible.” The reader can understand the problem and its consequences. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, though: “a serious problem among the whole building” and “make less noise during nighttime hours” could be expressed more idiomatically. “Without improper sleep” also does not convey your intended meaning naturally, and “working professional” is less direct than simply explaining that you work early. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases rather than adding formal-sounding wording. This would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “The sound that comes from the video games” and the contrast introduced by “but.” Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur. In “who also rented the flat,” the tense does not fit the neighbour’s current tenancy; “who also rents” is appropriate. “The sound … make harder” has subject–verb agreement and sentence-structure problems, while “I have to early in the morning” is missing a verb. The sentence beginning “As I am a working professional” also needs clearer punctuation and structure. Review agreement, complete verb phrases and clause boundaries, then proofread for these patterns. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
