Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about my neighbour's excessive noise. It is very disturbing, and i want that you should counsil them to make it better.

I am a residence on second floor in flat number 115. I have been living there for 4 years. Everything was satisfied untill the arrival of new neighbours. They have been shifted from last 2 months. They are teenagers and used to play games and movies at night in high volume. Noise remains high till morning.

I am a nurse and currently working in a hospital. Usually i have to work in long shifts which is quite hectic. At night when i want to rest to get up fresh for the next day, but due to noise i could not sleep properly. I remain tired all the day due to sleep deprivation.

I personally talk with them about this matter. For few days there was not such problem after that its remused. I request you to counsil them or make some resendial policies about noise which everyone should know and implement them.

I would appreciate your consideration.

Yous faithfully,

Faiza.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the problem began after new neighbours arrived two months ago, describe the effect on your sleep and energy, and ask the agency to speak to them or establish noise policies. The detail about working long hospital shifts helps show why the issue matters, and mentioning that you already spoke to the neighbours adds useful context. To strengthen the letter further, make the requested action more specific—for example, ask the agency to remind the tenants of quiet hours and follow up if the noise continues. Overall, the relevant ideas are extended and supported, although the final request could be developed more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: complaint and background, personal impact, previous attempt to resolve the issue, and a request to the agency. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “after that” and “due to noise” make some relationships between ideas clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent arrangement and shows some flexibility in linking information. However, a few transitions are awkward or unclear, particularly “For few days there was not such problem after that its remused,” which makes the sequence difficult to follow. Improve the flow by using clearer time links, such as “The noise stopped for a few days, but then it started again,” and ensure each paragraph develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to explain the situation and its effects, including “excessive noise,” “long shifts,” and “sleep deprivation.” These choices communicate the main message, but the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or spellings make parts of the letter less natural and occasionally harder to understand. For example, “counsil,” “resendial policies,” and “its remused” do not convey the intended meaning clearly; “residential noise rules” and “the noise resumed” would be more suitable. “I am a residence” also uses the wrong word form. Build accuracy with common formal-letter collocations, such as “I am a resident” and “I would appreciate it if you could contact them.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the explanation of your work schedule and its effect on your rest. However, errors in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and punctuation are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For instance, “At night when i want to rest to get up fresh for the next day, but due to noise i could not sleep properly” is not a complete, well-formed sentence; it could be revised as “At night, I need to rest so that I can feel refreshed the next day, but the noise prevents me from sleeping properly.” Other examples include “They have been shifted from last 2 months” and “I personally talk with them.” Practise accurate past and present-perfect forms, complete clauses, and capitalisation of “I.”
