Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards the difficulty, which I am facing from last couple of weeks. My neighbour who happens to be your customer as well is giving me trouble by playing video games on high volume.
Initially he used to play video games with headphones so it was convenient for us but, later on he started playing without it and even at night his shoutings and loud voice comes to our house.
I am living with an infant that is why it becomes very difficult to avoid this loud sounds. I also sleep early and because of this problem we are not able to live peacefully.
I would like you to intervene and try to solve this problem as I have made multiple attempts to solve this problem but the gentleman does not want to listen. I gave up after that and decided to write my complaint to you. Thank you
Kind regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify the problem as having started “from last couple of weeks,” explain that the neighbour now plays without headphones and makes noise at night, and describe the impact on your sleep and your infant. You also request the agency’s intervention and mention that you have already tried speaking to the neighbour. These details make the purpose clear and support your request. To strengthen the response further, make the timeline more precise and explain the consequences in a little more detail—for example, how often the noise occurs or how it affects the infant. A specific action you want the agency to take would also make the request more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe how the neighbour’s behaviour changed, explain its effects, and then ask the agency to act. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “Initially,” “later on,” and “because of this problem” guide the reader through the account. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence beginning “Initially” contains several ideas joined together, and the final request, your previous attempts, and the closing thanks are crowded into one paragraph. Separating the request from the explanation of your attempts would make the progression more controlled and the ending more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “high volume,” “intervene,” and “live peacefully.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for a formal letter, which limits the flexibility and accuracy of your vocabulary. For example, “draw your attention towards the difficulty” is an awkward way to introduce a complaint, while “shoutings” and “loud sounds” are not natural expressions in this context. “Giving me trouble” is also rather informal. Aim for precise, conventional collocations such as “bring this issue to your attention,” “shouting and loud voices,” and “causing a disturbance.” These changes would make the tone more professional without changing your meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “My neighbour who happens to be your customer as well” and a reason clause in “because of this problem.” The meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. In “which I am facing from last couple of weeks,” the time expression needs a different tense and article; “for the last couple of weeks” would be more accurate. In “his shoutings and loud voice comes,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the sentence shifts awkwardly between singular and plural. The long sentence beginning “I would like you to intervene” would also benefit from clearer punctuation or division into shorter sentences. More consistent control of these patterns would improve accuracy.
