Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this to make a request to give notice to my neighbour who plays abnoxious video games at night. As a tenant, I recently rent a flat from your accommodation agency so the neighbour who plays very loud games. Their room number is 105 and mine is 106 in the building block R.

I shifted to this flat at 10th october and all the facilities here are excellent, however, at that night I heard loud music from the neighbour. Then the next day, I requested them not to make such noice, however no respond were given by them and the issue remained the same.

I came here in this city for my higher studies, everyday I hve lecture at 6 AM. Furthermore, I am unable to sleep at night due to the abnoxious noice which come from the neighbourhood. Consequently, I feel drowsy entire day and unable to concentrate on my studies.

I would like you to give notice to my neighbour regarding the noice and tell them to use headphones while playing games so that others can sleep well at night. I hope you solve this issue. Waiting for your responce to my problem.

Yours faithfully,

Alex.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you identify when the disturbance began (“at that night” after moving in on 10 October), explain its effect on your sleep and studies, and ask the agency to contact the neighbour and suggest headphones. The request is clear and the details about your early lecture and the flat numbers make the complaint specific. This is a well-focused response with a clear purpose throughout. To strengthen it further, develop the timeline more precisely—for example, say whether the noise has continued every night since you moved in—and make the requested action slightly more explicit, such as asking the agency to investigate or remind the tenant of quiet-hour rules.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression: you introduce the complaint, describe how it began, explain its impact, and finish with a request. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and connectors such as “however,” “Furthermore,” and “Consequently” help show relationships between ideas. The overall organisation is clear, though some links feel mechanical or unclear. For instance, “so the neighbour who plays very loud games” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence, and “Then the next day” could be linked more naturally to the date you moved in. The closing also shifts abruptly from the request to “Waiting for your responce.” Smoother transitions and clearer references would make the progression more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “drowsy,” “concentrate,” and “accommodation agency.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “abnoxious,” “noice,” “hve,” and “responce” are misspelled, while “give notice to my neighbour” is not the natural phrase for asking the agency to address the behaviour. “Loud music” is also less precise than the task’s description of loud video games. Some repetition of “noise” and “neighbour” limits flexibility. Aim for accurate, natural collocations such as “raise a complaint,” “disturbing noise,” and “contact the tenant,” and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a result introduced by “Consequently.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect fluency. For example, “I recently rent a flat” should use a past or present-perfect form, “no respond were given” has incorrect noun and verb agreement, and “the noise which come” needs a singular verb. The opening sentence also joins ideas awkwardly, while “I shifted to this flat at 10th october” has problems with the preposition and date construction. Practise accurate past-tense narration and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries.
