Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain regarding the noise from my neighbour's flat every night. I rented this flat from your agnecy three months ago and currently residing in Belvedere Towers, Manchester.

The problem began ten days ago, when I heard loud video game noises from the next door around midnight for quite sometime. Since my husband and I both are working professionals and we have to start our day early every morning, the noise was very loud even to our bedroom that we were not able to sleep properly.

We have already tried reaching out to them to control the noises, however, they do not seem willing to be cooperative enough on this matter. As they have also rented their flat from your agency, I would request you to please reach out to them to control their video games music or lower it to the extent it does not disturb the neighbours. This would be highly appreciated.

Looking forward to your positive reponse.

Yours faithfully,

Jina Grace

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify when the problem began (“ten days ago”), explain its effect on you and your husband—particularly the difficulty sleeping before early work—and request that the agency contact the neighbours and ask them to reduce the volume. These details make the complaint relevant and actionable. To strengthen the response further, develop the requested action a little more precisely, for example by asking the agency to remind the tenants of quiet-hour rules or to follow up if the noise continues. The impact could also be described with one specific consequence beyond poor sleep. Overall, the key information is clear and sufficiently supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains when the noise started and how it affects you, then states what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Since” and “As” help connect reasons to requests. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence beginning “Since my husband and I…” combines the reason for needing sleep with the effect of the noise, making the relationship slightly awkward to follow. Consider separating these ideas and using a clearer transition. The response is well organised overall, though a few links between details could be more controlled and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “complain,” “control,” “cooperative,” and “disturb the neighbours.” The meaning remains clear throughout, and the tone is generally suitable. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “video game noises,” “control their video games music,” and “positive reponse.” “Reach out” is understandable but less formal than the rest of the letter. There are also spelling errors, including “agnecy” and “reponse.” Aim for more natural phrases such as “loud gaming noise,” “turn down the volume,” and “a favourable response,” and proofread carefully. This would make your vocabulary more precise and consistent in register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the time clause “when I heard…” and the reason clause beginning “Since…”. Most of the message is understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following the complaint. Some grammatical problems remain, however. In “I rented this flat… and currently residing,” the second verb needs a subject and a finite form: “and I currently reside.” The phrase “my husband and I both are working professionals” has awkward word order, while “the noise was very loud even to our bedroom that…” needs a clearer construction, such as “the noise was so loud that we could hear it in our bedroom.” Review verb forms, clause structure, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
