Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to submit a compaint againt my neighbour who bothers me by playing very loud video games during the late night.

I start my work at 06:00AM, so I usually sleep early in the night (around 08:00PM). However, during mid night they start to disturb me with loud video games noise which impacts on my sleeping cycle. Since I move at this place, I am uable to complete 8 hours of sleep which could cause a bad impact on my physical and mental health.

I want you to send them a serious notice to stop this behaviour and explain them the consequences of their activity. If they repeat same behaviour, then I would like to request you to find an alternate to solve this problem.

I appreciate for your time to address my concern and looking forward to your prompt response.

Regards,

Jashanveer Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you identify the late-night gaming, explain that it disrupts your sleep before an early work start, and ask the agency to issue a notice and take further action if the behaviour continues. These details make the complaint relevant and your requested outcome clear. However, the timing of when the problem began is not explained precisely: “Since I move at this place” suggests it started after moving in, but gives no timeframe and is difficult to interpret. The effects are also stated mainly as a general risk to your health rather than describing a specific impact, such as tiredness or difficulty concentrating at work. Clarifying when the noise first started and extending these details would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening complaint, a paragraph explaining the sleep problem, and a final paragraph requesting action. This makes the main purpose easy to follow, and the closing is appropriate. You also use linking expressions such as “However,” “Since,” and “If” to show contrast, cause, and condition. Some connections are less smooth or precise, particularly “Since I move at this place,” which makes the timeline unclear, and “If they repeat same behaviour,” which would benefit from a clearer reference to the neighbour’s actions. The request for a “serious notice” followed by an alternative solution is understandable, but the steps could be sequenced more explicitly. More precise referencing and transitions would make the cohesion feel less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “submit a complaint,” “sleeping cycle,” “physical and mental health,” and “prompt response.” The tone is generally suitable for writing to an agency, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate choices. Several spelling and collocation problems reduce precision: “compaint” and “againt” are misspelled, while “video games noise” and “I appreciate for your time” are not natural combinations. “Find an alternate” is also vague in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases for noise complaints and requests for intervention, and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more precise and natural without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional request: “If they repeat same behaviour, then I would like to request you…” The main ideas are generally understandable, and the letter includes some accurate sentence structures. However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Since I move at this place” has an unclear tense and construction; “explain them the consequences” needs a different pattern, such as “explain the consequences to them”; and “If they repeat same behaviour” is missing an article. The sentence about sleep also shifts awkwardly from “I start” to “I usually sleep” and “they start.” Review tense consistency, articles, and verb patterns, while retaining the complex structures you have attempted.
