Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing this to raise a concern about the loud gaming noise that the new neighbour plays at night.

I live in flat no 706. Recently, a new tenant arrived in the flat no 707. This issue is happening since he arrived. We hardly slept any night after his arrival.

He make very loud noises while playing games at night. That disturbes us and create difficulty during sleep. My job requires me to wake-up early. But due to these noises I can hardly get proper sleep. This is impacting my work life and also affecting my family's sleep.

It will be helpful if you could investigate this matter and issue a written notice to him. Please mention him to keep the volume down during night hours.

I hope you will take action at the earliest.

Kind regards,

Owais Ansari

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify when the problem began by linking it to the new tenant’s arrival, explain the effects on your sleep, work, and family, and request an investigation and written notice asking the neighbour to lower the volume. These details make the complaint relevant and sufficiently supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the requested action a little more—for example, ask the agency to contact the tenant promptly and let you know what steps it takes. The impact is clear, although “We hardly slept any night” is a broad statement that could be made more specific by describing how often the noise occurs or how late it continues.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, gives the background, explains the consequences, and ends with a request and polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and linking phrases such as “Recently,” “But due to these noises,” and “I hope” guide the reader through the message. The sequence is easy to follow and the purpose remains clear throughout. To make the organisation more polished, connect the arrival of the tenant and the start of the noise more smoothly, and avoid relying on “This” in “This issue is happening since he arrived,” where the reference is slightly vague. A more direct transition would make the relationship between events clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for making a clear complaint, with relevant expressions such as “raise a concern,” “written notice,” and “keep the volume down.” The reader can understand the problem and its effects without difficulty. However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or repetitive, including “the loud gaming noise that the new neighbour plays” and “issue a written notice to him.” “Gaming noise” is understandable, but a more natural phrase would be “noise from his video games.” You also repeat “noise/noises” and “sleep,” so using a few precise alternatives would improve flexibility. Aim for natural, formal phrasing rather than simply choosing more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “My job requires me to wake-up early” and “But due to these noises I can hardly get proper sleep.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “He make” should be “He makes,” and “That disturbes us and create difficulty” needs agreement and a more suitable verb form: “This disturbs us and creates difficulties.” The time expression “This issue is happening since he arrived” would be more accurately expressed as “This issue has been happening since he arrived.” Review subject–verb agreement and present perfect forms, and vary sentence openings to demonstrate a wider range while keeping the sentences accurate.
