Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing to complain about a noise problem in the flat I rent from your agency at flat 12,Greenstreet, karachi.

The problem began about two weeks ago, when a new neighbour moved into flat 13 next to my flat .Since he moved in ,he has been playing very loud video games every night from 11 pm until 2 am. The walls between our flats are quite thin, so the sound is ver clear in my home.

This noice is causing me serios problems. As a housewife with two small children,I need to wake up early in the morning.Because of the loud noise ,my children and I cannot sleep properly. My younger son gets scared by the sudden loud sonds .As a reslult , we feel tired all day and my children cannot concentrate on their school woerk.

I have tried to talk to my neighbour politely, but he didnot listen. Therefore ,I would be grateful if you could kindly speak to him about this matter.

I hope you can solve this problem as soon as possible.

Thank you for your kind help.

Yours faithfully,

saad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter fully addresses the three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify when the problem began (“about two weeks ago”), give specific hours (“from 11 pm until 2 am”), and explain its effects on both you and your children, including disrupted sleep and difficulty concentrating at school. You also make a clear request for the agency to speak to the neighbour, and mentioning that you have already tried to resolve the issue politely adds useful context. These details develop the complaint well and make the requested action understandable. To strengthen the letter further, you could specify a practical outcome, such as asking the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours or follow up with you.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain its timing and source, describe its effects, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “Therefore” and “As a result” help show cause and consequence. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some connections and punctuation are less controlled, however: “Because of the loud noise” repeats the cause already established, and spacing around commas and full stops is inconsistent. The opening and closing are also understandable but could follow formal letter conventions more consistently. For a more polished flow, use transitions selectively and check sentence boundaries and punctuation when editing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the situation and its impact, including “complain,” “politely,” “sudden,” and “concentrate.” The wording is generally understandable, but spelling errors and some imprecise or unnatural choices limit the range and control. Examples include “noice,” “serios,” “ver clear,” “sonds,” “reslult,” and “woerk”; these can distract the reader even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. “Very loud video games” communicates the issue, but a more precise phrase such as “loud gaming noise” would sound more natural. Build accuracy by proofreading spelling and learning common complaint-letter collocations, such as “disrupted sleep” and “take action.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a time clause (“when a new neighbour moved in”), a reason clause (“Because of the loud noise”), and a conditional request (“if you could kindly speak to him”). These structures help convey the sequence and consequences clearly. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors in sentence boundaries, spacing, and punctuation occur across the letter. For example, “Since he moved in ,he has been playing” needs cleaner punctuation, while “As a housewife with two small children,I need” requires a space after the comma. The sentence beginning “Because of the loud noise” is also better joined to the preceding sentence or punctuated as a complete sentence. Review comma use, spacing, and sentence construction to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
