Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or madam,

I am writing this letter to formally complain about unnecessary noise coming to my apartment from my neighbor's flat which has been rented by your agency. There is been no problem with my accommodation, everything was outstanding. However, since the night I moved in I am traumatize with the late night video games sound. I tried to talk and sort things out but it does not making any difference.

Not only my sleep but my daily schedule has also been effected by noise. I work early mornings and it's been hard to wake up for my office because of late night disturbance. Moreover, all these circumstances are led to superior headaches throughout the day.

I would appreciate if you could consider my request and try to provide them with a warning. In addition, please take serious action against tenants if recommended.

I hope you will look into this matter and take necessary steps to resolve it. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Your faithfully

Satvinder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify the neighbour’s late-night gaming, explain its effects on sleep, work and headaches, and ask the agency to issue a warning and take action. The complaint is clear and relevant, and the opening and closing suit a formal letter. The timing is stated as “since the night I moved in,” but this could be more precise—for example, by saying how long ago you moved in or when the noise first became regular. The requested action is also somewhat general: “take serious action” does not specify what should happen if the warning is ignored. These details are less fully developed than the impact on your daily life; clearer specifics would make the request more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: the first paragraph introduces the complaint and its history, the second describes its effects, and the third makes a request. Linking phrases such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” help show relationships between points. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Not only my sleep but my daily schedule has also been effected” is an awkward transition, and “In addition” introduces a request that is not clearly distinguished from the preceding one. The final sentence repeats the general request to resolve the matter rather than adding a new point. To strengthen progression, use clearer links between the problem, its consequences, and the specific action you want, while avoiding repeated conclusions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “formally complain,” “late night disturbance,” “daily schedule,” and “take necessary steps.” These choices make the situation and its impact understandable. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations: “unnecessary noise coming to my apartment” would be more naturally expressed as noise coming from the neighbour’s flat, while “superior headaches” does not convey the intended meaning. “Outstanding” is also an unusual way to describe the accommodation in this context. These attempts at more formal language show range, but greater precision and natural collocation would improve control. Prefer straightforward, accurate phrases such as “severe headaches” and “issue a formal warning.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including “I work early mornings and it’s been hard to wake up for my office because of late night disturbance.” Most sentences communicate the main point, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “There is been no problem” should be “There has been no problem,” and “it does not making any difference” should be “it does not make any difference.” In “since the night I moved in I am traumatize,” the tense and verb form need correction; a natural version is “I have been disturbed since the night I moved in.” The sentence beginning “Not only…” also needs parallel structure and subject–verb agreement. More consistent tense control and accurate verb forms would make the letter smoother.
