Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am one of your rental company's client who recently occupied an apartment in 'The grand' building on the 14th floor. I have been recently facing a noise issue from my neighnour's place which is really disruptive at nights.

This issue began since last weekend when I guess my neighbour had some guests coming over and I could clearly listen loud noises in the middle of the night similar to one from video games. Due to such disturbing noise I was unable to sleep on time and couldn't have a healthy sleep. I struggled a lot to distract my mind but since it was unbearably loud, I couldn't pass over.

Therefore, I kindly request you to please issue a notice to the occupant reagarding this unacceptable behavior. Since I'm also a migraine patient, my doctor has prescribed me to get a proper 8 hours of sleep, which lately has been impossible to do so. I hope you understand my condition and I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Taru

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, polite request to the agency. You identify the timing as “since last weekend,” explain that the noise prevents you from sleeping properly, and ask the agency to issue a notice to the occupant. The migraine detail also gives a relevant reason for your concern. These ideas are extended with supporting information, which makes the complaint persuasive. To develop the response further, clarify whether the gaming noise has continued on multiple nights and specify the practical action you want the agency to take, such as contacting the neighbour and ensuring quiet hours are observed. The opening “Dear Sir” also does not follow the supplied greeting, and “Yours faithfully” would be more consistent with “Dear Sir or Madam.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the problem, describe when it began and its effect, then make a request and close the letter. Paragraphing helps distinguish the complaint from its consequences and proposed action. Linking expressions such as “Due to” and “Therefore” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. Some connections could be more precise: “This issue began since last weekend” combines two time constructions, and the transition from the neighbour having guests to the noise being caused by video games is not fully clear. The final paragraph also combines the request, medical explanation and closing expectation in one block. Separating the requested action from the personal impact would make the organisation more controlled and the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “disruptive,” “unbearably loud,” “occupant” and “prescribed.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the issue, and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “rental company's client,” “listen loud noises,” “pass over” and “proper 8 hours of sleep.” There are also spelling errors in “neighnour” and “reagarding.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and polish. Aim for natural complaint-letter phrases and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the noise as something you “can hear,” and say that it prevents you from “getting a full night’s sleep.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect construction “Due to such disturbing noise I was unable to sleep on time” and the conditional clause “Since I'm also a migraine patient.” The message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am one of your rental company's client” has a number and possessive construction problem, while “This issue began since last weekend” uses an incorrect tense pattern. In “I hope you understand my condition and I look forward to your response,” the two clauses need clearer punctuation or a conjunction structure. Review articles, singular and plural agreement, and time expressions, then proofread sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the control already shown.
