Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express disatisfaction reagarding my next door neighbour.
I moved into new flat # 234 last month. It was going good until new couple moved into flat next to me. As you know, I work full time job as well as studying my Masters. After working hours, I come home and prepare for exams.
Last week, I have observed loud noise coming from the next door. When I checked, I found they play video games late at night and put it on full volume. I tried to explain them my situation but they refused to comply with me.
It is affecting me a lot as I am unable to concerntrate on my studies. As a result, I could not complete my assignment and received no marks. Moreover, it disturbs my sleep also. I get late for my work.
I would like you to warm them as other people also live here. I belive you must make them aware them society rule and penality when it comes to affecting other.
I hopw you will resolve this conecern as soon as possible.
Thank you for your help in advance.
Regards,
Manny

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose throughout. The timing is identified as “Last week,” and you explain the effects with specific consequences: difficulty studying, an assignment receiving no marks, and disrupted sleep affecting work. You also make a clear request for the agency to warn the neighbours and explain the rules and penalties. These details extend the main ideas and make the complaint convincing. To strengthen the response further, clarify the timeline: the couple moved in, but it is not fully clear whether the noise began immediately or only last week. The requested action could also be more precise, such as asking the agency to contact them and ensure the noise stops at night.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible progression: you introduce the complaint, give background, describe the noise and its effects, and then request action. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “As a result” and “Moreover” show how the effects relate. This gives the reader a coherent overall account. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence about your work and studies appears before the noise is introduced, and “When I checked” does not clearly explain what you did to establish the source. The final request also moves quickly from a warning to rules and penalties. Use clearer transitions and make the sequence of events and requested steps more explicit to make the progression more consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “full volume,” “unable to concentrate,” “assignment,” and “disturbs my sleep.” However, the range is limited in places, and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce the letter’s polish: “disatisfaction,” “reagarding,” “belive,” and “conecern.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “make them aware them society rule” and “affecting other.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they can cause difficulty and weaken the formal tone. Check spelling carefully and learn common complaint-letter collocations, for example “make them aware of the building rules” and “affecting other residents.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more developed sentences, including “As you know, I work full time job as well as studying my Masters” and “As a result, I could not complete my assignment and received no marks.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur often enough to affect clarity. For example, “I work full time job” needs an article, while “I found they play video games” shifts tense awkwardly after “found.” In “I would like you to warm them,” the sentence structure does not express the intended request correctly. There are also problems with agreement and sentence boundaries in “I believe you must make them aware them society rule and penality.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete request structures.
