Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a residence in a property no 11 Ward Cresent, Ta ATatu Peninsula. I write this letter to complain the loud noice from video game from next door house which is under the same agency with my one.
Since last month, every weekends, it was a loud noise from 10 pm to 2 am from that house. I have a baby aged 9 months and 2 years old girl who need a quiet enviroment to sleep, espacially at the night time. 2 weeks after i had been experianced noise polution, my baby consumed 30% less milk than usual. I went to see the doctor to check if there is any heath issue with him. The doctor confirmed that less sleep at night time after appartise for baby.
Could you please mitigate this issue before I send complaining to countcil?
Best Regard,
Bree

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the main purpose and include the key details: the noise has occurred since last month, happens at weekends from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., affects your children’s sleep, and you ask the agency to intervene. The specific impact on your baby and your visit to the doctor make the complaint relevant. However, the request is brief and could be clearer about the action you expect, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet hours. The effect on your older child is also less developed. The response is three words below the required minimum, so it does not meet the length requirement; adding a little detail about the requested solution would address this naturally.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain when the noise occurs and its effects, then make a request. The paragraphing supports this progression, and time markers such as “Since last month” and “2 weeks after” help the reader follow events. This is a coherent arrangement, though the links between some details could be smoother. For example, the sentence about the baby consuming less milk moves quickly from the noise to a health concern, and the doctor’s conclusion is difficult to follow. A clearer transition explaining how disrupted sleep led to the concern would strengthen the progression. The closing request could also connect more directly to the problem and specify the agency’s next step.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “complain,” “noise pollution,” “quiet environment,” and “mitigate this issue.” These choices communicate the general problem, but several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “noice,” “enviroment,” “experianced,” and “countcil.” Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear: “I am a residence” and “the loud noise from video game from next door house” do not express the intended meaning idiomatically. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, “I am a tenant” and “loud video-game noise from the neighbouring flat” would make the opening more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the sentence explaining that your children need a quiet environment and the sequence about consulting a doctor. However, grammatical errors occur in key sentences and sometimes make the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “I am a residence in a property” has an incorrect sentence structure, while “I write this letter to complain the loud noise” is missing a grammatical pattern after “complain.” The sentence beginning “I have a baby aged 9 months and 2 years old girl” also needs clearer structure, and “The doctor confirmed that less sleep…” is incomplete. Practise complete clauses, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
