Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing to express my concerns about my new neighbour in the building managed by your accomodation agency.I recently moved in a first floor flate through your accomodation agency and I was pleased with overall environment of the society and the flat layout, however since the first day of my residence, I noted loud souds from my neighbouring flat that had a negative impact on my overall experience.

My existing neighbour plays very lound video games and it can be ongoing late at night.I tried to cope with situation initially with some sort on insulation , however it is now affecting my sleep and it is getting difficult for me to prepare for my work in the morning.Furthermore I moved with my one year old daughter and loud noise is affecting her sleep as well making my family comfort worse.

I spoke to my neighbout politely but this negotiation did not solve the problem.I am hoping that your company should scalate this issue and have a conversation with my neighbour. Secondly the accomodation society should have some regulations for residents that can ensure mutual respect among residents.

I am looking forward for receiving encouraging responce from your agency to sort this matter in your earliest covenience.

your faithfully

Ejaz Ahmed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you say the noise began “since the first day” you moved in, explain its effects on your sleep, work preparation and daughter, and ask the agency to speak with the neighbour and establish regulations. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. The impact is particularly well supported by the reference to your one-year-old daughter. However, the requested action could be more specific: for example, ask the agency to contact the neighbour promptly and ensure that quiet hours are observed. The request for general regulations is less directly tied to resolving this particular complaint. This covers the task well, while some ideas—especially the proposed solution—could be developed more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from introducing the complaint, to describing its effects, and then requesting action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “however,” “Furthermore” and “Secondly” help connect points. The reader can follow the main message throughout. Some transitions are less smooth: “I tried to cope with situation initially with some sort on insulation” is difficult to connect to the later account of speaking to the neighbour, and “Secondly” suggests a list whose first item is not clearly signposted. The opening and closing also need more conventional letter formatting. To strengthen the flow, present the timeline and steps already taken in a clear order, then make the requested actions a concise, parallel list.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “negative impact,” “affecting my sleep,” “mutual respect” and “regulations.” These choices communicate the issue and show some range beyond basic wording. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural collocations are noticeable, including “accomodation,” “lound,” “souds,” “escalate this issue,” and “sort this matter in your earliest covenience.” Some phrases, such as “family comfort worse,” are also unclear or unnatural. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint, but they limit precision and polish. Check spelling carefully and learn common formal collocations, such as “resolve the matter at your earliest convenience” and “raise the issue with my neighbour.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a reason-and-result explanation of how the noise affects your family. The main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in articles, sentence boundaries and clause construction. For example, “I moved in a first floor flate” needs an article and a more accurate preposition, while “it can be ongoing late at night” is not a well-formed verb construction. The opening paragraph also runs several clauses together without clear punctuation, and “I am hoping that your company should…” combines verb patterns awkwardly. Use shorter, controlled sentences where needed, and check articles, verb forms and punctuation when editing.
