Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about my high noice coming from my neighbor's flat late at night.

The problem began approximately 1 month ago when he started playing video games at night. The loud noices usually started at 10pm and continuing until 1 or 2am in the morning.

The noice affects my sleep schedule as I do morning shifts. I cannot sleep properly and even I cannot concentrate properly at work. It is affecting my physical health as well as my mental health. This situation has become very disturbing for me. I have also tried to ignore the noise, but unfortunately, the situation does not improve.

I would really appreciate it if you could contact my neighbour and remind him the noise regulations. I would like you to take appropriate action so that the problem does not affect anyone in the future.

I hope you will resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

jaspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose throughout. You identify when the issue began (“approximately 1 month ago”), give a useful time range for the noise, and explain its effects on sleep, work concentration, and wellbeing. Your request that the agency contact the neighbour and remind him of the regulations is also specific and relevant. These details extend the main ideas rather than merely listing them. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether you have already spoken to the neighbour or whether you expect the agency to take further action if the noise continues. Overall, the complaint and requested outcome are clear and well supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its timing, describe its effects, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “unfortunately,” “as well as,” and “so that” help connect ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be smoother: “I have also tried to ignore the noise, but unfortunately, the situation does not improve” is understandable, but the relationship between ignoring the noise and the situation continuing could be expressed more precisely. A clearer transition from the effects to your request would also strengthen the flow. Overall, the organisation is logical, with cohesion generally effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary communicates the complaint and its consequences clearly, using relevant expressions such as “morning shifts,” “concentrate properly at work,” and “appropriate action.” However, the range is somewhat limited, and several choices or spelling errors reduce precision. “High noice” is not a natural way to describe the problem; “excessive noise” would be more suitable. The repeated spelling “noices/noice” should be corrected to “noise,” and “remind him the noise regulations” needs a more natural collocation, such as “remind him of the noise regulations.” You also repeat “properly” and “affecting” where more varied wording could help. More precise formal vocabulary would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “I would really appreciate it if you could contact my neighbour” and “so that the problem does not affect anyone in the future.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, but some grammatical errors persist. In “The loud noices usually started at 10pm and continuing until 1 or 2am,” the verb forms are not parallel; use “start … and continue” or “started … and continued.” In “remind him the noise regulations,” the verb pattern requires “of.” The sentence “I cannot sleep properly and even I cannot concentrate properly at work” would be clearer as “I cannot sleep properly, and I also struggle to concentrate at work.” Greater control of verb forms and sentence patterns would improve accuracy.
