Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction regarding the flat which I bought 15 days ago from your agency. Everything was going well earlier, but unfortunately, new neighbours have been creating noise issues at midnight with loud music since last week, and I have been distracted from my studies and sometimes from sleep as well.

As I am a university student, I have to accomplish my assignments at night, but I am unable to focus on my studies due to the loud DJ sound. There are older residents also living in this area, they are also unable to sleep well at midnight.

I hope that the neighbours will be notified by you about this rising concern, so I can concentrate on my presentations and do well in my studies. I hope it will be solved within a couple of days.

Hoping for a positive response from you. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Japneet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses the main points: it says the noise began “since last week,” explains that it disrupts your studies and sleep, and asks the agency to notify the neighbours. These details make the purpose clear and relevant. However, the opening says you “bought” the flat, whereas the task states that you rent it, and the complaint shifts from loud video games to “loud music” and “DJ sound.” This weakens the accuracy of the situation. The request is also somewhat limited: asking for notification is clear, but you could specify a practical follow-up, such as asking the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours and confirm what action it will take. Some points are therefore more fully addressed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe its effect, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and phrases such as “As I am a university student” connect the noise to its impact. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some links are less smooth, however. “Everything was going well earlier, but unfortunately” is a broad transition, and the sentence about older residents is added without explaining whether you know they are affected or how this supports your request. The final hope for a response and the hope that the issue will be solved repeat the same idea. More precise transitions and a tighter closing would make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “express my dissatisfaction,” “distracted from my studies,” and “rising concern.” These phrases communicate the main message, and the vocabulary is generally understandable. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “bought” does not fit a rented flat, “DJ sound” is an imprecise description of video-game noise, and “accomplish my assignments” is less natural than a common collocation such as “complete my assignments.” “Positive response” is also vague when you mean action to resolve the disturbance. Aim for precise, context-appropriate wording and natural collocations; this will make the complaint sound more convincing and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, the opening uses a contrast with “but,” while “As I am a university student” introduces a reason for the impact. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “There are older residents also living in this area, they are also unable to sleep,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma; use a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction. The phrase “I hope it will be solved” has an unclear reference, so name the problem directly. Also, “since last week” would be clearer as “which began last week” in this sentence. More careful sentence boundaries and clearer references would improve accuracy.
