Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter to complaint about my adjoining unit, eventhough living in a highly maintained society my neighbour still plays a very loud video games late at night which is quite disturbing for me.
The issue has been inititate a month ago when one other guy came and started residing in a same with my nieghbour. Both of them acts very aggressive while playing the games. Moreover, most of the times they began fight as well with each other, which is only because of thier craze about the game.
Owing to these circumstances i am unable to sleep at night, and as a result my whole work life schedule during the day becomes unstable and non- productive. Apart from this, situation adversely effect my mental health too.
It would be really appreciating if a strict warning would be issue to my nieghbour. Otherwise - I will file a legal complaint against him.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it says the disturbance began “a month ago,” explains that it disrupts sleep, daytime work, and mental health, and asks the agency to issue a warning. These details make the complaint relevant and understandable. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The start of the problem is linked to “one other guy” moving in, but the relationship between this person and the neighbour is unclear; the requested action is also limited to a warning, with no specific request to investigate or ensure the noise stops. The threat of legal action is clear but may sound confrontational. A more measured request for the agency to contact the tenant and follow up would strengthen the letter’s purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: the opening introduces the complaint, the next paragraphs explain its onset and effects, and the final paragraph requests action. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Moreover,” “Owing to these circumstances,” and “Apart from this” show an effort to connect ideas. Some connections are less clear or slightly mechanical. For example, “one other guy came and started residing in a same with my neighbour” makes the situation difficult to follow, while “Otherwise” introduces the legal threat abruptly. The opening sentence also combines several ideas at once. Clarifying the neighbour’s circumstances and using a more direct transition into the request would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of complaint-related vocabulary, including “adjoining unit,” “adversely,” “strict warning,” and “legal complaint,” so the message is generally clear and the tone is recognisably formal. However, noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision: “to complaint” should be “to complain,” “inititate” should be “started” or “began,” and “highly maintained society” is not a natural way to describe the building or residential complex. “Non-productive” is also less natural in this context than “less productive.” Some choices, such as “craze about the game,” are understandable but imprecise. Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at complex sentences, such as “Owing to these circumstances I am unable to sleep at night, and as a result…” This gives some variety, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, however. For example, “Both of them acts” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “when one other guy came and started residing in a same” has problems with articles and sentence construction. The opening sentence is also overloaded, making its structure harder to control. Use shorter sentences where several ideas are being combined, and check agreement, articles, and tense patterns. For instance, “The problem began a month ago, when another tenant moved in with my neighbour” expresses the timeline more clearly.
