Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to bring to your attention about an issue that is concerning me the most thesedays is the loud music that my neighbour usually play every night.

I have been confronting this problem for last month and trying to adjust thing according to my way such as putting my head under pillow so I could not hear the high volume of music that disturb my sleep. However it is not working because tolerating such a high volume is really herculine for me.

I am a working women who spent most of the time at workplace and come back at home to do rest and have a proper sleep. On the othe other hand I am unable to do so due to the fact that it is putting negative effect on my sleep, so it further causes a number of other problems as well; feeling tired all the morning, sleepy whole day, not much energetic and headache.

I would appreciate if you warn my neighbour because he is more likely to listen you instead of me. Otherwise either you can put heavy fine because of disturbing others or give him notice to leave that accommodation as it is not only me who is facing this situation, my other neighbour who is living next to me he has the same concerm because of him.

Waiting to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you say the problem has lasted “for last month,” explain its effects on your sleep and energy, and ask the agency to warn or penalise the neighbour. The impact is made relevant with details such as feeling tired and having headaches. The request is also clear, but the proposed actions—especially giving the neighbour notice to leave—could be framed more proportionately and politely for a formal complaint. Some details are less fully developed: the start of the problem is not precise, and the claim that another neighbour is affected is difficult to follow. A clearer timeline and a specific first step, such as asking the agency to contact the neighbour and enforce quiet hours, would strengthen the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for the problem, its effects, and the requested action. This gives the reader a generally clear route through your message, and phrases such as “However” and “On the other hand” attempt to connect ideas. Some links are not fully logical or are overused: “On the other hand” does not introduce a contrast, while “so it further causes” makes the relationship between poor sleep and the listed effects cumbersome. The final request also combines several actions and the point about another neighbour in one long sentence, making the reference to “him” unclear. Use shorter sentences and more precise transitions to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “high volume,” “disturbing others,” and “negative effect on my sleep.” There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, such as “confronting this problem” and “I would appreciate,” although some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. For example, “herculine” is a misspelling and is not the right word for describing how difficult the noise is to tolerate; “heavy fine” is also an awkward collocation. Other errors include “thesedays,” “othe,” and “concerm.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and polish. Prefer familiar, accurate complaint language and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “so,” and “who,” and the main message remains understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles make parts less controlled. For example, “an issue that is concerning me the most thesedays is” is an awkwardly constructed clause, and “my neighbour usually play” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “I have been confronting this problem for last month,” the tense pattern and article are not well formed. The long sentence beginning “I would appreciate if you warn” also needs more accurate clause structure and punctuation. Practise accurate complaint-letter patterns such as “I would appreciate it if you could…” and review agreement and articles.
