Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding an apartment I rented through your agency. My neighbor usually plays video games specifically at late nights.
I moved in this society in January, room number 216. I was having good experience in a first few months but as soon as a flat next to me (room number 217) got acquired by Mr. James (May 2026), I started struggling with it.
I would like like mention a few difficulties I am facing: I usually struggle with sleeping at night and my kids are not getting enough sleep. It is affecting my productivity at work, I have already received a warning letter from my manager that I am not performing my duties as expected. Also, my children are facing a similar problem as they are unable to perform well in the academic.
I would therefore be grateful if you could contact Mr. James and asked him to lower tje volume at late night. Although I have tried to solve this matter on personal stage, the problem is still bothering me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Harshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies when the issue began (after Mr James moved into the neighbouring flat in May 2026), explains the effects on your sleep, work and children’s studies, and asks the agency to contact him about reducing the volume. The request is clear and appropriately directed to the agency, and the formal opening and closing suit the situation. The effects are relevant and supported with specific consequences, such as receiving a warning from your manager. To make the response more fully developed, clarify how often the gaming occurs and specify the late-night hours. You could also state more directly what action you expect if the noise continues, such as a formal reminder or follow-up.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, give its background, describe its effects, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while phrases such as “I would therefore” make the move from the problem to the requested action easy to follow. The letter is coherent throughout, although a few links and references could be smoother. For example, “I started struggling with it” is not fully precise about whether “it” means the noise or the neighbour’s gaming. The transition “Although I have tried to solve this matter…” would work better before or alongside a clearer explanation of what you tried. More precise referencing and a slightly smoother connection between the final two points would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “dissatisfaction,” “productivity,” and “perform my duties.” However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “in this society” does not naturally describe moving into a residential building, and “on personal stage” is unclear. There is also a spelling error in “tje,” and “plays video games specifically at late nights” is awkwardly phrased. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make the letter less fluent and polished. Focus on common, accurate collocations for accommodation complaints and use direct expressions such as “late at night” and “in person.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For instance, the sentence beginning “Although I have tried…” shows an attempt to use a subordinate clause, while the effects paragraph combines several related points. Some grammatical errors remain. “I moved in this society” has an incorrect preposition and article pattern; “I would like like mention” repeats a word and is missing “to”; and “contact Mr. James and asked him” does not keep the verb forms parallel. The phrase “in the academic” also has an incomplete grammatical construction. Review infinitive patterns, parallel verbs after “and,” and article use. Greater accuracy in these areas would make the varied sentences more controlled.
