Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the loud noise that I have been facing because of late night video game from the other roommate.

Last week, when I came home after work at midnight, I heard group of people partying and playing very loud video games. I let it go for a day but since then every night I have been facing the same issue.

I have to wake up early in the morning for my university. The noise is so loud that I am not able to sleep whole night which is distracting me to concentrate and stay focused in my classes. Also, I have assignments and presentations that I have to work on at home. But because of this problem I am not able to do any of it.

I would appreciate it if you could inform him to turn down the vidoe games so it would not cause any inconvenience to his co-renters. And also to let you know that I spoke to him about the issue but still he is continuing to do it so I would be grateful if you could help me with this.

Yours Faithfully,

Ben

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the problem began (“Last week”) and explain that it has continued every night; you also describe its effects on sleep, university classes, and work at home. Your request for the agency to intervene is clear, and mentioning that you have already spoken to the neighbour gives useful context. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timeline slightly—for example, whether the noise began on that first night or after it—and specify a practical action, such as asking the neighbour to observe quiet hours. The main ideas are relevant and supported, though some details could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its onset, describe its effects, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “since then,” “Also,” and “But” help connect the points. The reader can follow the message without difficulty. Some connections are less smooth, particularly the final paragraph, where the request, your previous conversation with the neighbour, and the appeal for help are joined in a long sentence. The repeated use of “because of this problem” also makes the cohesion slightly mechanical. Separating the request from the background information and using clearer references would make the progression more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “express my concern,” “distracting me,” and “stay focused.” The meaning remains clear, but some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive. “Late night video game” would be more natural as “late-night gaming,” while “other roommate” is not quite accurate for a neighbour in a separate flat. There are also spelling and form slips, including “vidoe” and “co-renters,” which weaken the overall control. Aim for precise terms such as “neighbour” and “residents in adjoining flats,” and vary repeated references to the noise. These refinements would make the letter sound more natural and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as “The noise is so loud that I am not able to sleep whole night” and the conditional request beginning “I would appreciate it if…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the reader can understand the complaint. Some grammatical errors remain: “I heard group of people” needs an article, “sleep whole night” needs a determiner, and “which is distracting me to concentrate” has an awkward grammatical relationship between the clause and its verb. The final paragraph also combines several ideas in a sentence that is difficult to control. Review articles and clause construction, and split longer sentences so that each request or explanation has a clear grammatical structure.
