Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this to express my frustration about the noisy environment created by my neighbour. They plays video games with extreme loud volume till late night, giving me had time to sleep.

Firstly, they start playing it on low sound which was not really bothering me, but from last week things are drastically changed when music turned to be very high.

I am having a rough time in every night to get quality sleep. Moreover, this lack of rest make it worst waking up with angry mood, and whole day I feel sleepy at my work which is detoriating my productivity.

All in all it would be appreciated of ypu could request them to not to do it now and i would look for

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the central problem, explain that it became worse last week, and describe its effects on your sleep, mood, and work. However, the task is only partly addressed: the opening says the neighbour plays loudly “till late night,” but the timing is not made specific, and the request to the agency is incomplete. The final sentence ends at “I would look for,” so the reader cannot tell what action you want beyond asking the neighbour to stop. The response is also 23 words below the required minimum, which leaves little room to develop the details. Complete the request—for example, ask the agency to contact the neighbour and ensure quiet hours are respected—and add a suitable closing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable sequence: you introduce the noise, explain when it worsened, describe its effects, and begin to request action. “Firstly” and “Moreover” help signal the progression, and the main points are generally understandable. However, the response is very brief and the ideas are presented in one continuous block, so the organisation is not fully clear as a formal letter. The ending is especially disruptive: “All in all” introduces a conclusion, but the sentence stops before the request is complete. Use separate paragraphs for the problem, its effects, and the requested action, and finish with a complete closing. This would make the progression easier to follow and the letter feel complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary to communicate the impact of the noise, including “quality sleep,” “angry mood,” and “productivity.” There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “rough time,” although some combinations are unnatural or unclear. For example, “giving me had time to sleep” does not convey the intended meaning clearly, and “extreme loud volume” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “detoriating” and “ypu,” along with the informal “All in all,” reduce the accuracy and appropriacy of the language. Aim for precise, natural phrases suited to a formal complaint, such as “making it difficult to sleep” and “seriously affecting my work performance.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “Moreover” that links the lack of rest to its effects during the day. However, errors are frequent, and some make the message difficult to interpret. In “They plays video games,” the subject and verb do not agree; “they start playing it” also shifts awkwardly between plural reference and a singular object. The phrase “I am having a rough time in every night” has an incorrect preposition and tense pattern, while “this lack of rest make it worst” contains agreement and form errors. The final sentence is incomplete. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete sentence structures, then proofread each sentence for tense and preposition use.
