Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complaint regarding the loud noise of video game caused by the neighbour at late night. Aparently, we both rented the apartment from your agency.

The only thing I was expecting after I reached at home from my work was to get a quality sleep. It was around 11:30 p.m and suddently there was huge noise was coming from the unit besides mine. I thought to use my earphones but it was not helpful at all to reduce the level of noise.

Apart from the game noise, it seems like there were two people who were shouting to direct each other in a game. They were continously making noise of clapping hands to express their win. It disrupted my sleep.

I would like you to take follow up on this issue. Please advice the person to limit the noise level at night. I hope this matter resolved promptly. I look forward to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Sia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three required points: you identify the late-night gaming, describe its effect on your sleep, and ask the agency to intervene. The specific time, “11:30 p.m.,” helps explain the situation, while the disrupted sleep makes the impact clear. However, the beginning of the problem is not fully explained: the letter gives the time of one noisy incident but does not say when this started or whether it has happened repeatedly. Your requested action—asking the neighbour to limit the noise—is relevant, though it could be more specific, such as requesting that the agency contact them and ensure quiet hours are respected. These details would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the complaint, describes the disturbance and its effect, and ends with a request and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and the sequence from arriving home to hearing the noise is easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger progression expected at the next level. However, the link between the opening and the later account could be clearer, since the reader is not told whether the incident was a one-off or an ongoing problem. The transition “Apart from the game noise” is also slightly awkward because the shouting and clapping appear to be part of the same disturbance. More precise links would improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud noise,” “disrupted my sleep,” and “limit the noise level.” These choices make the situation understandable, and “quality sleep” shows an attempt to express the impact more specifically. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems limit precision: “noise of video game,” “take follow up,” and “making noise of clapping hands” are not natural expressions, while “Aparently” and “continously” are misspelled. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases such as “noise from video games,” “follow up on the complaint,” and “clapping loudly.” A broader set of precise complaint-related expressions would make the letter more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “The only thing I was expecting after I reached at home from my work was to get a quality sleep.” The meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “I am writing to complaint” uses the wrong verb form, and “there was huge noise was coming” combines incompatible structures. There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “from my work” and “the unit besides mine,” as well as the incomplete construction “I hope this matter resolved promptly.” Use simpler, well-controlled sentence patterns where needed, and check verb forms and sentence structure carefully. Greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the letter.
