Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
The intent of this correspondence is to bring this matter to your attention and seek an appropriate resolution.
I want to lodge a complain against my new neighbour. Regarding my complain I would like to highlight a few important observations. Recently one guy moved in to the next door in our flat. Since he came he used to make a loud noise around 2 AM.
Regrettably, this situation affects me a lot. My sleep is so sensitive, a little disturbance can wake me up in middle of the night. A volume from his playstation is so loud at night time. I am having insomnia; those type of disturbance trigger my problem. I have morning shift always, because of that I am not able to focus on work the following day.
To resolve this matter satisfactorily, I would like you to give him a notice about this issue. Moreover, that would be immensely beneficial if you advice him to lower his volume down at night time.
I extend my appreciation for your consideration and I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Maitri Bavarva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify when the problem began by saying the neighbour moved in recently and plays loudly around 2 a.m.; you explain the effects on your sleep and ability to focus at work; and you request that the agency issue a notice and advise him to reduce the volume. These details make the complaint relevant and supported. To strengthen the response further, make the timeline more precise—for example, state how long ago the neighbour moved in or how often the noise occurs—and clarify the specific action you expect the agency to take if the problem continues. The request is clear, though its practical follow-up could be developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, and then request action. Separate paragraphs help the reader distinguish these stages, while phrases such as “Regrettably” and “To resolve this matter” signal the shifts effectively. The formal opening and closing also frame the letter appropriately. Some linking language is more elaborate than necessary, however: “Regarding my complain I would like to highlight a few important observations” delays the main point, and “Moreover” adds little to the second part of the request. A more direct opening and simpler links between related ideas would make the progression feel more natural and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal complaint language, including “bring this matter to your attention,” “appropriate resolution,” and “anticipate your valued response.” The vocabulary communicates the problem clearly, and terms such as “insomnia” and “disturbance” help describe its impact. There are, however, some word-choice, spelling, and collocation inaccuracies: “lodge a complain” should be “lodge a complaint,” “a volume from his playstation” is unnatural, and “lower his volume down” is redundant. “Immensely beneficial” also sounds overly grand for a straightforward request. More natural, precise phrases would show stronger control of collocation and register while retaining your formal tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect explanation “because of that I am not able to focus on work the following day.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the reader can follow the complaint without difficulty. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “wake me up in middle of the night” needs an article, while “Since he came he used to make” does not express the intended ongoing situation accurately. The sentence beginning “Moreover, that would be immensely beneficial” also has an unclear grammatical structure. Review article use and choose consistent present-tense forms for continuing problems; these corrections would improve accuracy without requiring more complicated sentences.
