Nowadays, a growing number of people with health problems are trying alternative medicines and treatments instead of visiting their usual doctor.

Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, large proportion of individuals with health issues are taking alternative treatments and medicines rather than visiting their usual doctor. From my perspective, it is a positive development because one should try another doctor, if previous doctor is not capable to improve you condition.

The most significant factor that contribute to it is the negligibility of doctors to diagnose disease properly. They are giving medicines and suggesting remedies to the patients which are of no use to them. If patient is not getting any benefit from it, he will change the doctor for better guidance which is also crucial for their health. For instance, I visited to the doctor few months ago. She examined me and gave me the medicines. I took medicnes for almost 2 months but there was no change in my health. Then I decided to change the doctor and went to another one. She changed medicines an treatment plans which had vital effect on my health.

Advancement in technology is the cheery on top. Now people are more educated than previous ones because of the use o internet or artficial intelligence. Individuals search thier health conditions on internet and take much information about it Sometimes doctor is surprised by their knowledge. These are the perks of technology.

In the end I would like to say that it is the personal choice of very individual wether to try alternative medicines or not. Trying alternative treatments are the best options, if previous medicines are not working. It's good to take suggestions for other doctors for better understanding.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider trying alternatives a positive development when a previous doctor or treatment has not helped. The personal example of changing doctors supports this view and gives the response a relevant basis. However, the argument does not fully address the specific contrast in the prompt: it focuses mainly on consulting another doctor, while the question concerns alternative medicines and treatments instead of visiting one’s usual doctor. The point about internet and AI is relevant but remains general, and the conclusion repeats the preference for trying alternatives without considering possible risks, such as delaying effective medical care. To strengthen the response, explain what alternative treatments you mean and develop why their benefits outweigh their risks.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. The personal example also follows a clear sequence from the first consultation to the change in treatment. Some links between ideas are less clear, however. The technology paragraph moves from people searching online to doctors being surprised, without explaining how this supports the claim that alternative treatment is positive. Phrases such as “The most significant factor” and “In the end” help signal stages, but the progression can feel mechanical, and “it” in the opening of the second paragraph has an unclear reference. Use clearer links between each reason and your position, and develop each paragraph around one connected point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “diagnose disease,” “remedies,” “treatment plans,” and “artificial intelligence,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “negligibility” and “perks,” but these are not natural in context; “negligence” or “failure to diagnose” and “benefits” would be more suitable. Several spelling errors—“medicnes,” “thier,” and “artficial”—and awkward phrases such as “cheery on top” and “vital effect” reduce precision. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than choosing an unusual word where a simpler one is clearer. Proofreading spelling and checking phrases in context would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if previous doctor is not capable to improve you condition” and a relative clause in “which had vital effect on my health.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include missing or incorrect articles and possessives (“a large proportion,” “your condition”), subject–verb agreement (“factor that contribute”), and verb patterns (“capable of improving”). The sentence “If patient is not getting any benefit from it, he will change the doctor” also needs an article and more consistent reference. There are some run-on or poorly punctuated sentences, particularly in the technology paragraph. Review articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries while continuing to practise varied structures.
