Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that people change both their habits and their opinions as they grow older. I largely agree with this view because changes in responsibilities and priorities can influence people's daily routines, while greater life experience can cause them to reconsider their beliefs.
One major reason why people's habits change with age is that their responsibilities and priorities are not constant throughout their lives. As people move from childhood to adulthood, they may begin working, getting married or raising children, all of which require them to adopt different routines. For example, a young person may regularly stay up late, eat at irregular times and spend much of their free time socialising. However, after starting a full-time job and having a family, the same person may begin going to bed earlier, exercising regularly and following a more organised schedule. As a result, changes in circumstances naturally lead people to develop new habits that are more suitable for their stage of life.
People's opinions can also change as they gain knowledge and experience. This is because direct experiences often expose individuals to situations that they may not have considered when they were younger. For instance, a person may initially believe that working long hours is the most important factor in achieving success. However, after experiencing workplace stress and having less time for family and personal activities, they may come to value work-life balance more highly. Therefore, the experiences people accumulate over the years can challenge their previous beliefs and lead to more mature or balanced opinions.
In conclusion, I agree that it is common for people to change both their habits and opinions as they get older. Changes in responsibilities can influence their lifestyles, while increased knowledge and personal experience can cause them to reconsider their beliefs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. Each paragraph is well-developed with relevant examples, such as the transition from a student lifestyle to a professional one, and the shift in perspective regarding work-life balance. The ideas are extended logically, providing a clear rationale for why both habits and opinions evolve over time. The response is balanced and directly answers both parts of the question, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the discussion of habits and opinions is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'However', 'As a result', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is logical, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a concise conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the reader is guided through the argument without any confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for the academic context. The student uses a range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'responsibilities', 'priorities', 'accumulate', and 'reconsider their beliefs'. The collocations are natural, and there is evidence of a flexible range of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it stays within a standard range; to reach the highest band, a slightly more sophisticated or idiomatic use of language could be incorporated, but the current level is strong and error-free.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. There is a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('If... then' implied) and complex noun phrases. Punctuation is used accurately throughout. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips that might occur are not present here. The control over verb tenses and modal verbs is consistent, contributing to the overall clarity and professional tone of the writing.
