Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been commonly observed that perspectives of an individual and their habits become varied with their growing age. I completely agree with this notion as everyone evolves with passage of time through continuous learning and life experiences. This essay will discuss my point of view in detail.

First of all, people learn new things everyday that ultimately breaks the barrier of their same routine and the way they think. This means that what a person is doing today might not do the same tomorrow. For instance, when a child is in a school they have a habit of depending on their parents, however, when they are grown ups they make their own decisions. Therefore, with consistent learning individuals develop changes in their views and habits.

Additionally, with aging people gain different experiences in their life which guides them for future decision making and molding the way they live. To exemplify, most of the individuals are more health conscious when they reach in their thirties as compared to when they are in twenties. Thus, this clearly reflect that with time people understand and become aware of things that may not felt important at earlier stages of life. Hence, as a person grow their life experiences are also enriched and that leads to changed opinions and habits.

To recapitulate, people show difference in their perspectives and in their way of doing things when they grow in age. This happens because they keep learning new things daily and adapt to them. Also, they attain better understanding of life with their everyday life experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of agreement in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on learning and life experiences as drivers for change. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding children depending on parents is a bit generic and could have been more deeply explored to illustrate a specific shift in opinion or habit. While the essay is well-structured, the supporting arguments could benefit from more specific, nuanced examples to reach a higher band level. Overall, the response is clear and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Additionally', and 'To recapitulate' are used effectively to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the argument well. To improve, you could use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid rather than relying on standard signposting words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific language such as 'perspectives', 'continuous learning', and 'health conscious'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'breaks the barrier of their same routine' or 'what a person is doing today might not do the same tomorrow'. To achieve a higher band, focus on incorporating more sophisticated vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, and ensure that word choices are precise and contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'perspectives of an individual... become varied with their growing age' (subject-verb agreement/word choice), 'what a person is doing today might not do the same tomorrow' (missing object), and 'as a person grow' (subject-verb agreement). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy in subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency will help improve this score.
