Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that people tend to change both their habits and opinions as they grow older. I completely agree with this view since aging often brings changes in people' lifestyle and priorities, although fundamental values and core beliefs may remain relatively stable.

One of the primary reasons why people's habits change with age is that their responsibilities and circumstances sometimes tend to evolve. Young people generally have flexible schedules and spend a considerable amount of time exploring new places, watching movies and socializing. However, as they enter the workforce, establish families and take on greater financial responsibilities, their daily routines are likely to become structured. They may also adopt healthy habits as they become increasingly aware of the importance of their physical well-being. For instance, an individual who regularly consumes junk foods and avoids exercise may begin eating nutritious foods regular later in life.

People's opinions can also alter as they gain experience and encounter different perspectives. As individuals grow older, they are exposed to a wide range of social situations, cultures and ideas, which can cause them to reconsider beliefs that they previously held. Moreover, major life experiences, such as getting married, becoming a pregnant and changing careers, can significantly alter the way people perceive certain issues. For example, someone who prioritized career success may begin maintaining work-life balance after experiencing workplace stress later in life.

In conclusion, I largely agree that growing older commonly leads to changes in people's opinions and habits, primarily because their circumstances, responsibilities and life experiences evolve. Nevertheless, while lifestyle choices and specific opinions may change considerably, fundamental values and principles remain stable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses the prompt by discussing both habits and opinions. You maintain a clear position throughout, acknowledging that while change is common, core values often remain stable. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples such as the transition from a flexible student lifestyle to a structured professional one, and the shift in priorities after major life events like marriage or career changes. The argument is logical and balanced, meeting the requirements for a Band 8 performance by providing a nuanced perspective that goes beyond a simple agreement or disagreement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However,' 'For instance,' and 'Moreover,' to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the discussion of habits and opinions is handled well. The overall structure is coherent, and the use of referencing is clear throughout the text, making the essay easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'fundamental values,' 'evolve,' 'structured,' and 'prioritize' appropriately. The language is generally natural and precise. There are a few minor slips, such as 'becoming a pregnant' (should be 'becoming pregnant') and 'eating nutritious foods regular' (should be 'regularly'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and demonstrates an awareness of collocation and style suitable for an IELTS task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay uses a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'while lifestyle choices... may change... fundamental values... remain stable'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is strong. While there are minor errors, such as the aforementioned 'becoming a pregnant' and the adverbial error 'eating... regular,' these are infrequent and do not impede communication. The grammatical range is sufficient to support a high band score.
