Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that individuals have tendency of altering their decisions and habits as they become older. I completely agree with the given statement because they do it due to current circumstances and responsibilities.
The most significant reason to support this view is that people change their goals and ambitions based on practicality. To be more specific, their initial dreams may alter when they get older if the current situation demands something else. To give an example, I always dreamt of working for an IT organization since I was a child. However, during my secondary education, the employment industry experienced huge collapse for people working in this field and thus I went to pursue my career as an electrical engineer instead. Therefore, it is not necessary for people to stick with their initial opinions as they may change, depending on particular situations at that time.
Another equally important factor is that with age, people get more responsibilities, leaving no time to carry out the activities they are habituated to. As a consequence, they alter their habits. This is particularly evident in the modern nature of employment as people need to work to fulfill their financial and materialistic needs. This is primarily because today's fast-paced life makes employees work long hours, making them spend extremely little or no time to play sports which they used to do regularly during their childhood. Hence, their habits change as they get older.
To conclude, I firmly agree that it is extremely understandable that people do not stick with initial hobbies and decisions not only because they become responsible with age but also because of present situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. The introduction states a clear agreement, and the two body paragraphs provide relevant reasons: practicality in career choices and the impact of increased responsibilities on habits. The ideas are extended and supported with personal examples, such as the shift from IT to electrical engineering. While the arguments are logical and well-developed, the response could be improved by exploring the 'opinions' aspect of the prompt more deeply, as the focus leans heavily toward career and lifestyle habits. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'The most significant reason', 'To be more specific', 'Another equally important factor', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Referencing is generally clear, and the flow of information is consistent throughout the text, making the essay easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some flexibility. The student uses some less common items such as 'practicality', 'fast-paced', and 'materialistic needs'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'have tendency of altering' (should be 'have a tendency to alter') and 'employment industry experienced huge collapse' (should be 'experienced a huge collapse'). Despite these minor slips, the range is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly and with a reasonable level of precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over grammar and punctuation, though some errors persist. For instance, there are missing articles ('have tendency', 'employment industry') and minor phrasing issues ('habituated to' is slightly unnatural in this context). However, these errors do not impede communication. The student successfully uses complex sentences to explain cause and effect, and the overall grammatical control is solid, justifying a band 6.5 or 7.0. Given the frequency of error-free sentences, it leans towards the higher end.
