Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that people tend to change both their habits and their opinions as they grow older. This essay will elucidate that I believe strongly agree with this view and will explain the reasons and example in the subsequent paragraph.

To commen with, individuals often develop healthier or more practical habits as they age. To expound, when they are young, they may be more interested in entertainment and socialising. However, as they become older, they usually become more aware of the importance of maintaining good health. To cite an illustate, a young person may frequently eat fast food and avoid exercise, whereas after reaching their thirties, they may start eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and geeting enough sleep. Thus, after thirties they may cgange more habits, as a result they become greater responsibility.

To further solidify point, poeple's opinion can also change because of their experiences. Young people may have strong opinions about issues based mainly on what they have heard from their family, friends or social media. As they grow older, however, they encounter different people and situations, which can encourage them to reconsider their previous beliefs. For example, someone who once believed that working long hours was the best way to achieve success might later realise that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is equally important after experincing stress or spending more time with family.

To recapitulate, I strongly agree that people commonly change their habits and opinions a sthey get older. Greater life experience, increased responsibility and change priorities are the main reasons why people gradually adapt the way they live and think.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the shift from unhealthy habits to a balanced lifestyle and the evolution of professional perspectives. However, the development is somewhat limited; the ideas are clear but could be extended further to reach a higher band. For instance, the explanation of why responsibilities change could be more deeply explored. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the use of cohesive devices like 'To commence with', 'To further solidify', and 'To recapitulate' helps guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the relationship between ideas is generally clear. To improve, you could vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that referencing within sentences is more precise to avoid minor awkwardness in flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'balanced diet', 'work-life balance', and 'reconsider their previous beliefs'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'commen' (commence), 'illustate' (illustrate), 'geeting' (getting), and 'cgange' (change). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim for a wider range of less common lexical items and ensure greater accuracy in spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I believe strongly agree' (redundant), 'after thirties' (missing article), and 'change priorities' (should be 'changing priorities'). While these errors are present, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. The punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence structure is clear. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and gerunds to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
