Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether habits and opinions change with age. However, the position is somewhat contradictory. In the introduction, you state you agree with the statement, but the first body paragraph argues that habits and thinking do not change, which confuses the reader. While you provide some relevant examples, such as physical limitations due to aging, the development of ideas is inconsistent. To improve, ensure your position is clearly maintained throughout the essay and that your arguments directly support your thesis statement rather than presenting conflicting viewpoints that undermine your stated position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hindered by the contradictory arguments mentioned above. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately, such as 'In result' or 'In conclusion' when the summary does not fully align with the preceding arguments. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of ideas. Improving the use of linking words to show clear relationships between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic phrasing, such as 'getting older' and 'do the same activities'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'strong well power' (likely meaning 'willpower') and 'life spam' (likely meaning 'lifespan'). To achieve a higher score, focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary and ensuring that words are used in their correct context. Expanding your range of synonyms and learning common collocations will help you express your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('habits and views... has been changing'), incorrect verb forms ('people are getting used to of their habits'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar limits the score. You should focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and consistent tense control to improve the accuracy of your writing.
