Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the contemporary era, it has often been noticed that it is quite normal for individuals to change their habit and their view as they get older.I completely agree with this statement because people can fully understand the consequences of a bad habit and secondly, they learn from their life experiences.

To begin with, there are several reasons routine and opinions change over time. One major reason is that people are mature enough to understand properly, what is beneficial for them or not. They can understand the health issues they will face if they do not follow a proper health regime to maintain their overall health. For instance, adults tend to avoid junk food owing to the drawbacks, whereas the young ones will prefer to have fast food. As a result, a child's minds are still developing, however adolescent brains are developed enough to understand the merits and demerits.

Furthermore, citizens can learn from the experiences they gain in their life journey. Younger generations usually give much value to every person and tend to have a number of friends. Nevertheless, when the person gets older they learn that it is better to have two or three friends rather than a whole group of friends, who will not even support them in their difficult time. For example, if a person is hospitalised only the people who really care will shop up, otherwise the rest of them may not even text to ask about the well being.

In conclusion, I completely agree that people do change their habits and views when they get older because they are mature enough to understand the basics of life and can learn various aspects about life which can particularly change their thoughts about certain topics.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on maturity and life experience as drivers for change. While the arguments are logical, they could be further extended; for example, the discussion on social circles is a good point, but the explanation of why this happens could be more nuanced. The response is well-structured, and the examples provided, such as the comparison between junk food consumption in youth versus adulthood, effectively support the main argument. Overall, the response is well-developed and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is some minor repetition in phrasing, and the referencing could be slightly more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall flow of the essay is coherent, making it easy to follow the writer's line of reasoning throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is sufficient for the task. The student uses some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'contemporary era,' 'consequences,' 'regime,' and 'merits and demerits.' While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'shop up' instead of 'show up' and 'a child's minds' (subject-verb agreement error). The vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, but it lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, although some contain minor errors. For instance, 'a child's minds are still developing, however adolescent brains are developed enough' contains a punctuation error (a comma splice). There are also occasional errors in articles and subject-verb agreement, such as 'change their habit' (should be plural 'habits') and 'the rest of them may not even text to ask about the well being.' Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
