It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the contemporary era, it has often been noticed that it is quite normal for individuals to change their habits and views as they get older. I completely agree with this statement because people become mature enough to understand the consequences of bad habits and learn valuable lessons from their life experiences.

To begin with, there are several reasons why routines and opinions change over time. One major reason is that people become mature enough to understand what is beneficial for them and what is not. They can understand the health problems they may face if they do not follow a healthy lifestyle to maintain their overall well-being. For instance, adults tend to avoid junk food because they are aware of its drawbacks, whereas younger people are more likely to prefer fast food. As a result, children’s minds are still developing, while adolescents and adults are generally more capable of understanding the advantages and disadvantages of their choices.

Furthermore, people can learn from the experiences they gain throughout their lives. Younger generations usually place great value on friendships and tend to have a large number of friends. Nevertheless, as people get older, they often learn that it is better to have two or three close friends rather than a large group of acquaintances who may not support them during difficult times. For example, if a person is hospitalised, only those who genuinely care about them are likely to show up or ask about their well-being, whereas others may not even send a message to check on them.

In conclusion, I completely agree that people change their habits and views as they get older because they become mature enough to understand the realities of life and learn valuable lessons from their experiences, which can significantly influence their thoughts about certain topics.

The word choice is generally precise, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. While the range is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions could elevate the lexical resource further. Overall, the language is natural and fits the formal tone of an IELTS essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional structures ('if a person is hospitalised...') and relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammar is accurate, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited; incorporating more varied sentence patterns, such as inversion or passive voice, would demonstrate greater flexibility. However, the current level of accuracy is high.
