Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a natural process that individuals notice shifts in their behaviour and decision-making with age. I completely agree with the notion because those people have vast experience, knowledge, and the necessary changes they have made in response to different situations throughout their lives.

The main reason is that they have a variety of experiences. In other words, a person has to deal with various circumstances in life, which assists them in learning a significant lesson and making informed decisions for the future. For example, there are more chances of things going wrong for themselves and those who associate with them, while teenagers make decisions about studies or careers due to a lack of understanding of the situation and unawareness of the consequences. However, adults have realistic goals as they can distinguish achievable targets. Therefore, when older people make decisions, it is clear that they consider all factors and the severity of the situation.

Elders' needs change with time. When people become mature, they choose comfort and practical things that not only help them stay healthy and active but also keep them stress-free. For instance, if grey-haired people try to do rigorous exercise or heavy work, it can cause physical problems for them. In contrast, young people can easily handle these things, and it improves their strength. Hence, individuals adapt distinct habits during different age stages.

In conclusion, it is unavoidable to change occurs into habits and thinking of people, such as opinions and comfort, when they are approaching retirement age because

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by agreeing that habits and opinions change with age. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph discusses the role of experience in decision-making, the second paragraph focuses more on physical health and comfort rather than habits or opinions. Furthermore, the conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a full summary of the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that all paragraphs directly support the thesis and provide a complete, well-rounded conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the body. Cohesive devices such as 'In other words,' 'For example,' and 'In contrast' are used to link sentences and ideas effectively. However, the abrupt ending of the final paragraph significantly disrupts the coherence of the conclusion. While the paragraphing is generally appropriate, the failure to complete the final sentence leaves the reader without a sense of closure, which impacts the overall flow and logical structure of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'rigorous,' 'unavoidable,' and 'distinguish.' However, there are some awkward collocations and phrasing, such as 'change occurs into habits' and 'grey-haired people.' The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise lexical items limits the score. Improving the variety of synonyms and ensuring more natural word combinations would enhance the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'those people have... the necessary changes they have made' and the incomplete final sentence. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation is mostly correct, though the unfinished conclusion is a major issue. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and completing all sentences to maintain grammatical integrity throughout the entire piece.
