Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate regarding people who change with time as they get older. As the age progresses, human behaviour modifies where likes and dislikes depend their circumstances. So it is common to have different habits and opinions in the old age as compared to when they were young. This essay will discuss different perspectives before explaining why I disagree with this statement.

Human behaviour is mostly dependent on the norms of the society they live in. Ideas, values and moral aspects are all developed while they grow up in a specific culture and region. The majority of people adopt same trends and lifestyle that is followed by others. Although habits and opinions are not innate, it is difficult for many people to change with time. One major reason for this development is the fear of rejection from the society. For example, many rituals performed in modern day world are thought to be wrong by youngsters but they cannot object as their families do not approve this. Living in this type of society makes it hard to change perspectives even later in life.

However, there are some people who learn from the life experiences which tend to modify their life choices. This change can be due to exposure to different cultural values and ideas. Another potential reason is due to higher education which enlightens an individual and broadens their way of thinking. But there are many examples where highly qualified people still prefer to stick with same conventional beliefs and norms.

In conclusion, I disagree with this statement as behaviorial changes are difficult and human nature resist disruption and favor familiar habits irrespective of their age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt, but the position is somewhat contradictory. While the introduction states the author disagrees with the idea that people change, the body paragraphs acknowledge that some people do change due to education or experience. The argument lacks depth; for instance, the claim that 'highly qualified people still prefer to stick with same conventional beliefs' is a broad generalization that is not sufficiently supported with specific examples. To improve, ensure your position is consistent throughout and provide more nuanced, well-developed arguments that directly address the prompt's premise of changing habits and opinions over time.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between 'rituals' and 'youngsters' is not fully explained. The flow is generally smooth, but more sophisticated linking phrases would improve the overall coherence and make the argument more persuasive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'enlightens', 'conventional', and 'disruption'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'human nature resist disruption' (should be 'resists') and 'in the old age' (should be 'in old age'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and natural collocation expected at higher bands. Focusing on learning word families and common collocations will help elevate the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'likes and dislikes depend their circumstances' (missing preposition 'on'), 'adopt same trends' (missing article 'the'), and 'behaviorial' (spelling error). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing prepositions.
