Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is an ongoing debate regarding people who change their habits and opinions with time as they get older. As age progresses, human behaviour modifies where likes and dislikes depend their circumstances. So it is common to have different habits and opinions in the old age as compared to when they were young. This essay will discuss different perspectives before explaining why I agree with this statement.
Human behaviour is mostly dependent on the norms of the society they live in. Ideas, values and moral aspects are all developed while they grow up in a specific culture and region. The majority of people adopt same trends and lifestyle that is followed by others. Although habits and opinions are not innate, it is difficult for many people to change with time. One major reason for this development is the fear of rejection from the society. For example, many rituals performed in modern day world are thought to be wrong by youngsters but they cannot object as their families do not approve this. Living in this type of society makes it hard to change perspectives even later in life.
However, there are many people who learn from the life experiences which tend to modify their life choices. This change can be due to exposure to diverse cultural values and ideas. Another potential reason is due to higher education which enlightens an individual and broadens their way of thinking. It develops their critical thinking and deepens their understanding of complex social issues. This helps to break societal norms and conventional thinking. Additionally, due to advancement in technology, a lot of individuals are learning and changing with time. For example, social media awareness allows adults to adopt a healthy lifestyle by practicing a balanced diet, staying active and getting enough sleep.
In conclusion, I completely agree with this statement as time allows an individual to progress in life which alters opinions and habits based on their learning and experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the premise that habits and opinions change with age. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. The essay explores both the societal pressures that maintain consistency and the personal growth factors that drive change. While the argument is logical, some points could be further extended with more specific, personal examples to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as societal influence or personal growth. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'However,' 'Additionally,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. The student uses terms like 'enlightens,' 'conventional thinking,' and 'diverse cultural values' appropriately. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'modify their life choices' or 'as age progresses,' which are understandable but slightly unnatural. The range is adequate to convey complex ideas without significant repetition. To improve, the student should focus on more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'depend their circumstances' (missing 'on') and 'in the old age' (unnecessary article). Additionally, 'the majority of people adopt same trends' is missing an article. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The student shows a good attempt at using complex structures, but more consistent control over articles and prepositions would elevate the score.
