It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is commonly observed that it is hard for individuals to change their habits and opinions as they grow older. While many believe that it would not be easy to change when growing up, I completely disagree with the notion and I believe it is easy to change at later stages of life due to changes in preferences and political opinions.

Firstly, one of the key reasons is that many change due to changes in their circumstances, such as having children. For Instance, new parents change their routine after having a baby. Moreover, they would be more concerned about healthy diet for themselves and for the baby. Consequently, both parents and the newborn will lead to a healthier lifestyle if they reduce their screen time and focus on more productive relationship building activities. Additionally, they would reduce their use of phones and tablets to keep the baby away from radiation, which they were not able to do when they were bachelors.

Furthermore, another vital reason is switching political viewpoints. When citizens grow older, they understand their votes matter significantly to shape the country's future. To illustrate, millennials who refuse to vote when they first become eligible to vote start voting at every level of government, such as city councillor to member of parliament. Therefore, a change can be noticed when individuals get at certain maturity levels.

To conclude, I completely agree that people change their habits and opinions when they have clear objectives, like once they become parents and more responsible towards their social responsibilities such as voting.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The task is addressed well, with two distinct body paragraphs focusing on lifestyle changes and political awareness. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the impact of parenthood on daily routines and the shift in voting behavior among millennials. However, the development could be slightly more nuanced; for instance, the link between 'radiation' and phone use is a bit tenuous and could be replaced with more standard arguments about time management or health consciousness. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph—specifically the phrase 'they were not able to do when they were bachelors'—is a bit clunky. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother integration of ideas would help elevate this score further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'commonly observed', 'vital reason', and 'maturity levels' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'lead to a healthier lifestyle' is slightly misused in the context of the sentence, and 'bachelors' is a bit informal for this context. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is generally accurate and sufficient to communicate your points without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'newborn will lead to a healthier lifestyle' (which is slightly awkward) and 'individuals get at certain maturity levels' (should be 'reach'). Additionally, 'millennials who refuse to vote... start voting' is a good attempt at a complex structure, though the tense consistency could be tighter. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of prepositions.
