Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that people tend to change their habits and opinions as they grow older. I strongly agree with this view because people gain greater life experience and are influenced by changes in their responsibilities and circumstances.
Firstly, growing older usually brings people a wider range of experience, which can significantly affect their opinions. Young people often form their thinking based on their families, friends or social media, whereas adults are more likely to develop their own perspective after experiencing different situations. For example, a young person may believe that academic qualifications are the most important factor achieving success. However, after entering the workplace, they may realize that practical skills, communication and professional experience can be equally valuable. Therefore, personal experience can naturally lead people to reconsider opinions they held when they were younger.
Secondly, people's habits frequently change because their priorities and responsibilities evolve over time. As younger people become adults, however, they may have career, families and financial responsibilities that require a more organized lifestyle. Changes in one's day to day lifestyle demonstrate how age and circumstances can influence daily behaviour.
Nevertheless, not every habit or opinion changes with age. Some individuals retain strong beliefs and routines throughout their lives, particularly when these are closely connected to their values or personality. However, even these people are likely to modify certain aspects of their behaviour as their circumstances change.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that people commonly change their habits and opinions as they get older. Increased life experience, changing responsibilities and greater awareness of personal wellbeing are major factor that contribute to these changes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the transition from valuing academic qualifications to practical skills in the workplace. The argument is logically developed, and the inclusion of a counter-argument in the fourth paragraph adds depth, demonstrating a balanced approach. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher. To reach a higher band, more nuanced exploration of how specific 'opinions' change beyond just career-related ones could be beneficial.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion'. The referencing is generally clear, and the flow of information is easy to follow. While the use of cohesive devices is effective, it is occasionally slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the argument well. The response demonstrates a clear, logical flow that meets the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, allowing for a clear expression of ideas. Phrases like 'significantly affect their opinions', 'evolve over time', and 'retain strong beliefs' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some collocations could be more natural. For instance, 'major factor that contribute' contains a minor grammatical error in subject-verb agreement. Overall, the range is adequate for the task, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for an academic context, fitting the Band 6.5-7.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a reasonable level of accuracy, with the majority of sentences being error-free. However, there are a few minor slips, such as 'major factor that contribute' (should be 'factors that contribute') and 'have career, families and financial responsibilities' (should be 'careers, families, and financial responsibilities'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, supporting a Band 7.0 score.
