Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is an undeniable fact that with age, people's habits and opinions change. It is very common because when one ages, one gets experiences that could affect choices and decisions, and I agree with this statement. From my perspective, nothing remains the same over the years. In the paragraphs below, I would like to put forth my views with a valid opinion in the conclusion.

To begin with, life is full of challenges; there are many ups and downs throughout the journey of life. Apparently, challenges encountered on a life journey make a person wiser, as they teach how to tackle situations. Moreover, opinions change over time because of a person's thinking skills. For instance, a person might look rude at first glance, but as one takes time to get to know him, only then does one find his real nature.

Additionally, habits keep on changing. For example, kids have a habit of eating chocolates and fast food, although when they get older, their habits change because they learn that those things are not beneficial to their health.

However, we seldom give a thought to ponder over the other side of the story. Often, it is argued that one should stick to their opinions, which I agree, but in certain situations only. For example, if a lawyer is fighting a case for the truth, then he must stand by his opinions. Furthermore, good habits like respecting elders, helping others in need, and being punctual should never be changed, even with growing older.

The seemingly inexorable debate about changes in habits and opinions can keep on going. Nevertheless, showing deep reverence for all aspects and observing a finer nuance of the matter mentioned above, I espouse the notion of supporting the fact that many habits and opinions change with age. Some changes are because of social influence, while some are due to personal choice; however, people should always remember not to nurture habits and opinion that harm others and themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the premise that habits and opinions change with age. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the shift in dietary habits from childhood to adulthood and the evolution of social perceptions. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. While the counter-argument regarding core values is a good addition, it could have been expanded further to achieve a more balanced and nuanced discussion. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph could be more precise. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay demonstrates a logical structure throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some flexibility. The student uses some less common items such as 'inexorable', 'espouse', and 'nuance', which demonstrate an awareness of style. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'put forth my views with a valid opinion' or 'look rude at first glance'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The range is adequate to convey the intended meaning with reasonable precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and complex structures are attempted, such as the conditional 'if a lawyer is fighting a case...'. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'nurture habits and opinion' (should be plural 'opinions') and 'which I agree' (should be 'with which I agree'). These errors are infrequent and do not cause difficulty for the reader. The punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the overall clarity of the writing.
