Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is very common for people to change their habits and opinions as they get older. I agree with this statement because people gain more experience and their responsibilities and priorities also change over time .

Firstly, people often change their habits because their lifestyle becomes different as they grow older. When people are young , they may spend a lot of time with friends, eat unhealthy food and stay up late. However, as they become adults, they usually have jobs, families and other responsibilities. Therefore, they may start eating healthier food , exercising regularly and following a more organise daily routine. For example, a young person may enjoy eating fast food several times a week, but after becoming older, they may realize the importance of a healthy diet and choose to cook at home instead.

Secondly, people's opinions can change because they gain more knowledge and experience . Young people sometimes have strong opinions about certain issues without having experienced them personally. As they get older, they meet different kinds of people and face different situations, which can make them understand other points of view. For instance, a person may to achieve success when they are young. Later, after gaining work experience , they may realize that having a good life working balance is important.

In conclusion, I totally agree with changing habits and opinions according to getting old because of gaining experience and getting older.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by agreeing with the statement and providing reasons for changing habits and opinions. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat brief and could benefit from more detailed examples or a more nuanced exploration of the topic. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion is repetitive and lacks a summary of the main points. To improve, ensure you meet the word count requirement to allow for more thorough elaboration of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader through the text. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions are a bit mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, though the brevity of the conclusion slightly impacts the overall sense of completion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'responsibilities', 'priorities', and 'work-life balance'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler, repetitive phrasing such as 'get older' and 'change'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary and avoid repetitive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'more organise daily routine' (should be 'organized') and 'a person may to achieve success' (should be 'may want to achieve'). Additionally, the phrase 'according to getting old' is awkward and non-standard. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures and word forms. Increasing the variety of sentence types while focusing on accuracy will help improve this score.
