Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older. Do you agree or disagree?
People inevitably undergo various changes throughout their lives, and these changes often affect both their daily habits and their opinions. I strongly agree that growing older can significantly influence the way people behave and think, largely because of changing responsibilities, increased life experience, and exposure to different circumstances.
One major reason why people’s habits change as they age is the increasing level of responsibility they face. During childhood and adolescence, individuals generally have considerable freedom and may spend much of their time on entertainment and social activities. However, as they enter adulthood, responsibilities such as employment, marriage and raising children often become more important. Consequently, people may adopt healthier routines, manage their finances more carefully and devote more time to work and family. For instance, a young person may regularly stay up late and spend money impulsively, whereas the same individual, after starting a career and having a family, may develop a disciplined sleeping schedule and prioritise saving money.
Age can also lead to significant changes in people’s opinions because experience tends to broaden their understanding of life. Young people sometimes form strong opinions based primarily on what they learn from their families, friends or social media. As they grow older, however, they encounter different people, cultures and situations, which can challenge their previous assumptions. For example, someone who initially believes that academic qualifications are the most important factor in achieving success may change this view after gaining professional experience and realising that communication skills, perseverance and practical knowledge can be equally valuable.
Nevertheless, not every aspect of a person’s personality or beliefs necessarily changes with age. Some individuals maintain the same core values throughout their lives, particularly those related to family, honesty or personal principles. However, even when fundamental values remain unchanged, people’s perspectives and everyday behaviour can still evolve in response to new experiences and responsibilities.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that getting older commonly brings changes in both habits and opinions. Although people’s fundamental values may remain relatively stable, their experiences, responsibilities and changing circumstances naturally encourage them to reconsider their behaviour and perspectives.
