Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is very common for people to change both their habits and opinions as they get older I agree with this statement. As people grow their responsibilities and priorities changes with time.

Firstly i would like to explain about habits. Habits gradually changes with the growth of life and practicality. For instance, when people are young they spend more time in socializing, late night outs and eating unhealthy food. Gradually as they grow older and realize the importance of health they try to maintain balanced diet, early sleeping habit and regular exercise. For example a young boy goes to late night events and eat junk food does not realize that this habit can ruin his health in his early forties so as he grows and comes to his middle age, starts to exercise regularly going to gym and walks including healthy diet food with simple recipes. Also he makes sure of regular body checkup to avoid any further ailment.

Secondly opinions. Opinions does changes with time as per struggles and real facts that one's life faces. Yes, young generation are enthusiastic about their career, relation and financial stability but gradually everyone needs a peaceful life when they grow old. For example, a young person who is in his twenties will obviously choose a job where he earns more to accomplish his requirements but as he grows and reaches to his middle age, he will look for more job satisfaction with positive environment and balanced work-life.

So in conclusion, I strongly agree that people changes both their habits and opinions as they grow older. They understand the value of balanced and healthy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses both parts of the prompt regarding how habits and opinions change as people grow older. The student takes a clear position agreeing with the prompt and supports this with relevant examples, such as shifting from late-night socialising and junk food in youth to regular exercise and healthy eating in middle age, as well as prioritising financial gains in early adulthood over job satisfaction and work-life balance later on. While the ideas are well-explained, the examples could be slightly more fully extended to reach the highest band levels. However, all parts of the task are well covered, matching the Band 7 descriptor where a clear position is maintained and ideas are supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The writer uses sequential transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'So in conclusion' to guide the reader through the structure of the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas about habits from ideas about opinions, though paragraph divisions could be more distinct. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although some referencing is slightly repetitive (e.g., 'as they grow older', 'as he grows'). Overall, the logical flow and organisational structure meet the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 due to some mechanical transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'practicality', 'ailment', and 'financial stability'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'priorities changes' instead of 'priorities change', 'eating unhealthy food' instead of 'eating unhealthy foods', and 'opinions does changes'. Spelling and word-form errors are present ('relation' instead of 'relations', 'habits gradually changes'). These inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary profile squarely within the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, resulting in frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'priorities changes', 'Habits gradually changes', 'Opinions does changes', and 'young person who is in his twenties will obviously choose a job where he earns more... but as he grows... he will look for'. Punctuation is also occasionally weak, particularly missing commas after introductory phrases and run-on structures. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, aligning the essay with Band 5.5, rounded to 5.5.
