Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that many people tend to change their habits and opinions as they grow older. I strongly agree with this view because people gain new experiences and take on different responsibilities and develop a better understanding of life over time.

One major reason why people change their habits is that their lifestyle and responsibilities change with age. To explicit more, young people often fewer responsibilities and they may spend their free time socialising with friends and family, play games watch movies and stay up late. However, when they become adults and start working or raising a family. They must adopt a change in their habits. For example, a young people may sleep late everyday and eat fast food but after starting a job and getting married their responsibilities has increased which make them more disciplined towards life.

People can also change their opinion because of education and life experiences. As individual become older, they are exposed to different cultures, people and situations, which can change their previous beliefs. For example, someone who once believed that working from home was less productive might change their opinion after experiencing remote work and discovering that it can save commute time and create mote balance life between work and personal. In the same way travelling to different countries can make people more open minded about culture and lifestyles that are different from their own.

In conclusion, I completely agree that people change their habits and opinion as they get older. Because they go through with life experiences and unforeseen circumstances, education and major life events all this contributes to the way people think and behave into their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear and well-developed position on whether people change their habits and opinions as they age. The student explores two distinct angles: changing habits due to evolving responsibilities, and changing opinions driven by education, life experiences, and travel. Relevant examples, such as transitioning from a student lifestyle to starting a family, and discovering the benefits of remote work, are successfully utilised to extend and support the main ideas. Although there is a minor tendency to over-generalise typical life trajectories, all parts of the task are well covered throughout the essay, demonstrating a strong grasp of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a strong introduction, followed by two well-defined body paragraphs discussing habits and opinions respectively, and concluding with a clear summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To explicit more', 'However', and 'In the same way' are generally employed to guide the reader through the argument, though some transitions are slightly awkward or non-standard (e.g., 'To explicit more'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the overall progression of ideas remains easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'responsibilities', 'disciplined', 'open minded', and 'unforeseen circumstances'. There are occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'To explicit more' instead of 'To elaborate further' or 'To explain further', and 'mote balance life' instead of 'more balanced life'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the writer shows a good attempt at using functional phrasing to discuss personal growth and lifestyle transitions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. The student attempts complex structures with dependent clauses, such as 'As individual become older, they are exposed to different cultures...' and 'someone who once believed that working from home was less productive might change their opinion...'. However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including subject-verb agreement slips ('young people often fewer', 'As individual become'), fragment sentences ('when they become adults and start working or raising a family. They must adopt...'), and missing articles. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured.
