Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been evidently observed that people are more likely to change their habits and attitudes while giving opinions as they get older. I firmly agree with this statement since older people experience a significant number of distinct situations not only in personal life but also in professional workplaces. This essay will examine the appropriate reasons behind my opinion with some relevant examples in the following paragraphs.

To embark upon the most prominent reason of having improvement in people’s lifestyle and way of thinking by the age. Elderly people have gone through numerous challenging situations throughout their life span which encourage them to be resilient and self reliable. As a consequence, their point of views and perspectives can be affected inevitably. Moreover, by the different time periods of their age, they entirely focus on being able to make decisions more effectively. This approach fosters their ability to focus and dedication towards achieving their ultimate goals. Consequently, their determination would be unbeatable.

Apart from that people are more likely to gain more confidence when they get older. Since they overcome their failures and unfavourable circumstances, it boosts their self esteem and preservance. They never have a thought of giving up. For instance, in younger age, people have to come across several kinds of situations whether they are related to their personal life or professional career, these conditions promote their abilities to cope up and become an experienced person.

To conclude, every person learns from their past experiences and mistakes undoubtedly. In my perspective, old generation has good potential to raise their standard of living and thoughts by reflecting their past.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt effectively, presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement that people change their habits and opinions as they age. The ideas are generally well developed, focusing on how life experiences foster resilience, self-reliance, and confidence. However, some arguments tend to be slightly repetitive, particularly the discussion around how challenges in youth and adulthood build character and change perspectives. While the writer covers all parts of the task well and maintains a clear position throughout, the development of ideas could be more distinct and varied to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is adequately addressed in line with Band 6.5 or 7 criteria, and the response sits comfortably at Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression, divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "To embark upon", "Moreover", and "Apart from that". However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or awkward, such as "having improvement in people's lifestyle and way of thinking by the age". Paragraphing is utilized appropriately, but referencing and linking within paragraphs can occasionally be disjointed, affecting the flow. The writer demonstrates adequate control over cohesion, but the mechanical nature of certain transitional phrases keeps the score at a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as "resilient", "self reliable", "perseverance", and "unfavourable circumstances". However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as "giving opinions" instead of "forming opinions", and "by the different time periods of their age" which sounds unnatural. Spelling is generally good, but minor lexical errors and awkward phrasing occur regularly (e.g., "self esteem and preservance" with a spelling slip). Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, supporting a Band 6.0 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. There are instances of successful complex sentences, such as conditional or participial clauses. However, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing emerge, including punctuation issues and preposition errors, such as "in younger age" instead of "at a younger age" and "cope up" instead of "cope". Additionally, sentence boundaries and verb forms occasionally stumble, as seen in "old generation has good potential". These errors do not completely impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 6.0 an appropriate score.
