Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely observed that growing older often leads to substantial changes in a person's habits & perspectives. I am in a favor of this statement completely and points will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with the former view, the first & foremost point is that because of aging people develop a broader understanding of the world. To explain this, as a young person they often hold rigid, idealistic viewpoints because their experiences are limited. However, as they progress through different life stages – such as entering the workforce, raising a family, or handling financial independence – they encounter complex situations that challenge their initial assumptions. For example, a survey was conducted by BBC where 60% of young generation believe that career success is measured by wealth & status. But, as they grow older, they often realize the value of health & family, shifting their opinion to favor a balanced lifestyle over material gain.

Furthermore, another point for this that daily habits undergo significant transformation due to changing physical needs & personal responsibilities. To elaborate this, as the body ages, physical limitations make a health conscious routine necessary rather than optional. For instance, many adults who paid little attention to fitness in their 20s actively adopt regular exercise routines in their late 30s to maintain their well-being.

In conculsion, although personal growth is an inevitable part of aging process, the combination of physical necessity, new responsibilities, & deeper life insights ensures that neither habits nor opinions remain static. Embracing these changes allows individuals to adapt effectively to the shifting demands of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by clearly taking a stance agreeing that habits and opinions change with age. The writer's position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the shift from valuing wealth in youth to prioritizing health and family later in life, and the adoption of fitness routines due to aging physical needs. Although some examples are generalized rather than deeply personal, they sufficiently fulfill the prompt's requirements. The task is fully covered, earning a solid band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, starting with a clear introduction, followed by two well-supported body paragraphs addressing opinions and habits respectively, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are utilized, though there are minor mechanical elements and informal features such as 'To commence with the former view' and 'To elaborate this'. Overall, the logical flow is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is smooth, matching the criteria for a band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'substantial changes', 'rigid, idealistic viewpoints', 'financial independence', and 'significant transformation'. There are attempts to use less common items with general awareness of style. However, there are a few minor lexical slips and unnatural collocations, such as 'I am in a favor of this statement completely' (instead of in favour) and a minor spelling error in the conclusion ('conculsion'). These minor issues keep the lexical score at a band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'as a young person they often hold...' and 'many adults who paid little attention to fitness in their 20s actively adopt...'. There is good control of grammar overall, though punctuation and minor structural slips occur, such as the use of ampersands ('&') instead of full conjunction words, which is too informal for IELTS writing. Grammatical errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, placing the writing comfortably at a band 6.5.
