IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is not uncommon to see that people tend to change their perspectives and older habits while they are aging. I am of a firm conviction that, an individual definitely changes their opionions and life-styles as they enter in matured age. Supporting facts and suitable examples are enumerated in ensuing paragraphs.

Foremost among all habits the primary one would be the food chooices, that get to be changed with the age. Adolescents prefer to explore a plethora of food cuisines and neglect the significance of health hazards, as we see, in varsity students nowadays. Other than that they would prefer convenience food (for instance, ready to eat food sachets) that might not be a healthy option. Conversely, the same individual will change their food habits once they reached at early fourties age. To examplify, elderly people give more significance to the nutritional fact of the food, as opposed to the taste and aroma of the food. Meaning that they will rely on balanced diet system to achieve healthy pursuits for their active life-style.

Furthermore, youngsters are always keen to achieve impractical milestones, and spend their energy excusively on the career progression. Meaning that, people at early age are more attached to thier dreams and goals; and least attached to the religious beliefs and the family. It is by no means true that it is same for everyone, however, majority of people would do the same during their adolscence. Moreover, elderly group of people are more satisfied with their career progression, and do not prefer to run after materialistic objects, such as international travelling or luxurious accessaries. A person in a matured age, prefer to be in a comfort zone with his/her close knit family, meaning that he/she believe in spending quallitative time with the family.

To encapsulate, it is practical to say that general populace would evolve with their age and inclined to change thier old habits and perspectives. It is evidently seen that aged people are more inquisitive for spending time with family and in religious events as compared to younger people. Also, they tend to change thier food habits and the way of living once they enter in middle age. Therfore, I belive that people do change their opinions, goals and routine habits with the increased number of thier age.

Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the essay effectively. Referencing is generally clear, though minor instances of awkward transitional phrasing prevent the response from achieving a higher band in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'plethora', 'materialistic objects', and 'qualitative time' (though 'qualitative' is slightly misused here instead of 'quality'). There are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'opionions', 'chooices', 'excusively', 'adolscence', 'Therefore', and 'belive'. Although these errors occur, they do not impede communication because the writer's meaning remains clear. The lexical range is sufficient to support a solid Band 6 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, there are frequent errors in punctuation, article usage, and prepositions, such as 'as they enter in matured age', 'once they reached at early fourties age', and 'with the increased number of thier age'. While the complex structures are attempted with varying degrees of success, the grammatical errors are noticeable and occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, fitting the profile for a Band 6.
