Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often noticed that individuals feel a drastic change in their habits and their prespective as they grew older and gain experience in their life. It is undeniably true and I completely agree with this statement. In the upcoming essay we will discuss the reasons regarding this change.

To commence with, as individuals grew older and responsibilities came in their life such as children and career, their priorties and habits take a different turn. For instance, being parents could effect the habits of individual related to money. Any individual who is single barely thinks of saving money, whereas when they get family and children, their prespective changes and they start saving money for their future. Therefore, increasing responsibilities in life whether they are personal or professional, it effects the mindset of an individual and way of living.

Furthermore, people also experience a change in their life when they travel and get international experience. Travelling and getting exposure to different environment and culture could lead to change in viewpoint, as people started thinking about a situation from the different aspects. For example, if anyone have a amidst behaviour regarding a certain community or country, their views significantly changes ones they get a chance to live and know about that community or nation. Similarly, knowledge also effects the habits of people. For example, if someone knows about the detrimental effect of alcohol on their health, they probably stop drinking and educate other people as well.

To sum up, I certainly agree that people's habits and opinions changes as they grew older. This is because of experiences and responsibilities they get in their life. This changes their mindset and ability to deal with the situation. Likewise, information and knowledge also effects their habits and decision-making.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-developed position on whether people change their habits and opinions as they get older. The introduction clearly states agreement with the prompt, and the body paragraphs provide relevant, extended examples such as changing financial habits after starting a family and altering perspectives on foreign communities through travel. While the ideas are well supported and developed, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, which places the response firmly within Band 7. The progression of ideas throughout the essay is logical and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with financial responsibilities and moving on to travel and knowledge. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up', although referencing and connective links occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas and arguments. Overall, the structural framework of the essay is sound, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's arguments without difficulty, fitting the Band 7 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, incorporating less common lexical items such as 'responsibilities', 'perspective', 'detrimental effect', and 'decision-making'. However, there are a number of spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'prespective' instead of perspective, 'grew' instead of grow, 'priorties' instead of priorities, 'effect' instead of affect, and 'amidst behaviour'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations occur with some frequency, preventing the vocabulary score from reaching Band 7, but communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses ('Any individual who is single barely thinks...', 'if someone knows about...'). However, there are frequent grammatical and tense inconsistencies, such as 'as individuals grew older... responsibilities came' (tense shift), 'if anyone have' (subject-verb agreement), and 'views significantly changes ones they get' (typographical and grammatical errors). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they persist too frequently across the text for the response to achieve a Band 7.
