Student answer (Band 7.5)

In this modern era, people's lifestyles and perspectives are constantly changing. While some people advocate that it is quite common to alter habits and beliefs as people grow older, I firmly believe in this notion, and I will elaborate on the reasons in the following paragraphs.

To commence with, the first and foremost reason why people tend to change their habits is their responsibilities. In other words, when an individual is in the teenage and adolescent phases, they have more leisure time to spend on social media and enjoy themselves with their companions. However, as they grow into adulthood, they become more career-focused and goal-oriented, prioritizing their tasks according to their needs. For instance, after starting their careers, individuals often look after their families, save money for a secure future and try to adopt a healthy routine. Thus, people's habits constantly change as their responsibilities and priorities develop.

Furthermore, a significant reason for changes in lifestyles and perspectives is life experience. To elaborate on this, as individuals grow older, they face various situations, meet different people and learn valuable lessons from difficult circumstances. Their experiences can develop a new way of thinking, influence their beliefs and modify their attitudes and opinions. For example, a recent article published in the renowned newspaper *Hindustan Times* stated that many people become more goal-oriented and change their viewpoints after getting married as they grow older and follow a more responsible way of living. Consequently, this clearly demonstrates that different life experiences can significantly influence people's routines, attitudes and perspectives.

To recapitulate, it is evident that increasing age can significantly change our habits, attitudes and points of view because of changing responsibilities and task prioritization. Encounters with numerous life experiences can also influence the way individuals think and behave. Therefore, I firmly agree that people commonly change both their habits and opinions as they grow older.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by exploring whether people change both their habits and opinions as they get older, presenting a clear position right from the introductory paragraph ("I firmly believe in this notion"). The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the transition from teenage leisure to adult career focus and responsibilities, as well as the impact of marriage and life experiences. The arguments are extended naturally throughout the body paragraphs without going off-topic. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points while reinforcing the initial stance, meeting the band 7 and 8 criteria for task response well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the first body paragraph focusing on responsibilities, the second focusing on life experiences, and finally a succinct conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly, such as "To commence with", "In other words", "Furthermore", and "Consequently". Paragraphing is managed appropriately and contributes to the overall clarity of the essay, satisfying the descriptors for band 7 and leaning towards band 8.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student displays a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited for the task. Phrases like "career-focused and goal-oriented", "task prioritization", and "responsible way of living" show an ability to use less common items with good awareness of style and collocation. Word choices are mostly accurate and natural, such as "perspectives", "priorities", and "circumstances". While there are occasional minor phrasing issues, such as "advocate that" instead of "argue that", the vocabulary successfully conveys precise meanings without impeding communication, fitting comfortably into band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The writer demonstrates good control of grammar and punctuation, employing a variety of complex sentence structures successfully throughout the text. Examples include conditional and participial constructions such as "when an individual is in the teenage and adolescent phases..." and "after starting their careers, individuals often look after their families...". The majority of sentences are error-free, and any errors are very infrequent and minor, demonstrating a high level of grammatical accuracy that aligns with band 8 expectations.
